How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Tremor
These symptoms can be a sign that the dose is too high for you. It may help to change your dose or take your medicine at a different time of the day. There are also exercises that can improve muscle strength, control and coordination. In terms of lifestyle, avoid caffeine (in coffee, tea and chocolate), alcohol, and ask your doctor about other techniques to help you relax and manage stress. Talk to your doctor if this bothers you. Your doctor may be able to prescribe you medicines that can help.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Acne
Do not wash affected areas more than twice a day. Use a mild soap or cleanser and do not scrub the affected area. Avoid using too much make-up and excessive sun exposure. Try to eat a healthy balanced diet and avoid oily or spicy food. Do not try to squeeze spots and refrain from touching or picking the affected areas as it can trigger more acne, leading to infection or scarring. Regularly wash pillowcases, sheets and clothes that come in contact with acne. Talk to your doctor if your acne has not improved. They will assess your acne and suggest next steps for treatment.
  • Coping with Memory impairment
There is a lot you can do to improve your memory. Keep active and take regular exercise to improve blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. Eat a healthy diet so your brain gets the nutrients it needs. Some foods containing omega-3 fatty acids (such as oily fish) may benefit brain health. Keep mentally active. It is important to socialize, so stay in contact with friends and family. Stay organised – keep a diary for things you have to do, keep things you need regularly (such as keys, purse and spectacles) in a set place and do not try to do too many things at once. Make sure you get good sleep, make it a priority. Drinking alcohol can lead to confusion and memory loss, so try to cut down or stop. Also, stop smoking because it reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain. If you are worried about memory loss, talk to your doctor, especially if it affects your ability to live your daily life.
  • Coping with Hair loss
Use gentle hair products such as baby shampoo. Use a soft brush and comb gently. Avoid using hairdryers, curling tongs or hair straighteners and pat your hair dry after washing. Do not color your hair. Protect your scalp by covering your head in the sun. It is necessary to not take the stress and eat a balanced, nutritious diet as it is vital for the health of your hair.
  • Coping with Skin rash
There are many treatments for a wide range of skin problems. Avoid hot showers or baths because hot water can irritate the skin. Make sure to pat dry your skin after a bath or shower. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Leave the skin exposed to the air as much as possible. Do not use perfumed soaps or deodorants. Water containing chlorine can make most skin problems worse, so avoid swimming. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke and caffeine as it may also make itching worse. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Always use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Moisturizers can be used regularly to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better within a week, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
  • Coping with Weight gain
Try to eat a healthy balanced diet without increasing your portion sizes. Avoid processed meat or poultry and seafood. Eat small, frequent meals and eat slowly. Do not snack on foods that contain a lot of calories such as crisps, cakes, biscuits and sweets. If you feel hungry between meals, eat fruits and vegetables which have low calories. Avoid reaching for a sugary drink if you feel stressed. Fasting once a week can be an effective way to lose weight. Make sure you get enough sleep. With proper diet and lifestyle changes, you might not gain any weight or may gain only a small amount. Even then if it bothers you, ask your doctor if there are any alternative medicines that do not have this side effect.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.

FAQs

Q. How quickly does Olith work?

It takes some time before you see improvement in your symptoms after taking Olith. Though it varies from person to person, it may take 1-3 weeks or longer for you to see the full benefits of Olith. Do not stop taking Olith if you feel you are not improving. Instead, discuss it with your doctor.

Q. Does Olith make you sleepy?

Yes, Olith can cause nervous system disorders like sleepiness and dizziness and feeling confused. It can also cause rapid eye movements, blurred vision, or blind spots in your eyesight. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor. In addition, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery as it can be hazardous for you.

Q. Is Olith bad for kidneys?

Yes, Olith may cause kidney problems. Olith is not prescribed in patients who already have severe kidney impairment. The kidney problems may not be reversible and the symptoms include swollen ankles, passing a lot of urine and feeling thirsty. Before starting treatment with Olith, your doctor will get blood tests done to see if your kidney function is normal. During Olith therapy, any gradual or sudden changes in renal function, even within the normal range, may indicate the need for re-evaluation of treatment.

Q. Can Olith cause gain in weight?

Olith can cause both weight gain or weight loss. You should keep a check on your weight during Olith therapy. If you feel you are gaining or losing too much weight, consult your doctor who will assess whether the change in weight is due to Olith or some other reason.

Q. What is the most important information I should know about Olith?

Olith therapy should only be started if adequate facilities for assessing Olith levels are available. This is because Olith toxicity is related to increased levels of Olith in blood. Olith toxicity can even occur at dose which is effective for treatment. Therefore, your doctor may closely monitor your Olith levels weekly until stabilization is achieved, then weekly for one month and then at monthly intervals thereafter.

Q. How should Olith be taken?

Take Olith exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Check with your doctor if you are not sure. It is meant for oral administration and can be taken with or without food. However, if you start following a certain type of diet, talk to your doctor first. Any drastic changes in the amount of water you drink or amount of sodium (salt) in your diet may require more frequent monitoring of Olith levels.

Q. Which medicines decrease Olith levels?

You should inform your doctor about the medicines you are taking before starting Olith since many medicines interfere with the working of Olith. Some medicines decrease the levels of Olith in blood which means that it will not work well. These include theophylline (for asthma), caffeine, anything containing sodium bicarbonate, or a special group of diuretics (water tablets) called carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and urea used to treat skin conditions.
