Medronorm Tablet

Overview

Introduction

Medronorm Tablet is similar to the progesterone hormone naturally produced by the body. It regulates periods, stops irregular bleeding, and helps with withdrawal bleeding in cases of amenorrhea (unusual stopping of menstrual periods).

Medronorm Tablet should be taken as your doctor's advice. Your doctor will decide how much you need to take and for how much time. You may take it with or without food but better to take it at a fixed time. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you.

The most common side effects of this medicine include headache, abdominal pain, weakness, and dizziness. If any of these bothers you, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. It may also cause irregular periods, bleeding, or spotting in between menstrual periods. Let your doctor know if this occurs frequently.

Before taking this medicine you must let your doctor know if you ever had any problems like bleeding, or have a history of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, liver problems, or bleeding problems. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take this medicine.

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Medronorm

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Nervousness

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Abdominal pain
In most cases, this is mild enough to be treated at home. Try to rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. Having a warm bath or shower can help you relax and relieve the pain. Drink plenty of clear fluids such as water and reduce your intake of coffee, tea, lemon juice or soda. Avoid alcohol and smoking as these can aggravate the pain. Eating slowly and having smaller and more frequent meals can also help. If the pain is severe, speak to your doctor. They may be able to guide you better.
  • Coping with Weakness
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Eat a well-balanced diet to keep your energy levels up. Do not drink too much alcohol. Do not drive or use tools or machinery until you feel better. Other things that can help include doing some gentle exercise every day, prioritizing and pacing your activities and having a short nap if you need to. If you are still having problems after a week, speak to your doctor, as they may want to change you to a different type of medicine.
  • Coping with Dizziness
This is usually short-lived and should go away within a few days. If this happens, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Lying still in a dark, quiet room may help reduce the spinning feeling. Sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position. Get plenty of rest and try to relax as being anxious can make it worse. Try taking this medicine at bedtime to reduce the symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and ginger tea may also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking as it will make you feel worse. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel better.
  • Coping with Nervousness
This often disappears when the condition you are being treated for is managed. You could ask your doctor about changing the dose of your medicine or alternatives if it is affecting your daily life or causing you distress. Psychological treatments may be available. Some things you can do to help yourself include stopping smoking, cutting down the amount of alcohol and caffeine you drink, and doing regular exercise. You should also eat a healthy diet and find out how to get sleep if you are having trouble. Try talking to a friend or family member. Calming breathing exercises and other relaxation techniques may also help.

How to use Medronorm Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Medronorm Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Medronorm Tablet works

Medronorm Tablet is a progestin (female hormone). It works by replacing the natural progesterone hormone that the body is unable to make. This treats painful, irregular or absent menstrual periods. It also prevents an overgrowth of the lining of the uterus in menopausal women taking oestrogen (another female hormone).

FAQs

Q. How does Medronorm work? What is it used for?

Medronorm works similar to the progesterone hormone naturally produced by the body. It helps in regulating the periods, stopping irregular bleeding and for controlling the withdrawal bleeding in case of amenorrhea (unusual stopping of menstrual periods). It is also used to prevent endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the lining of the uterus) in women who are taking conjugated estrogens.

Q. When and how to take Medronorm?

Take it strictly as advised by your doctor. The number of doses and the duration will depend on the medical problem you are being treated for. You can take it with or without food, preferably at the same time of each day to ensure consistent levels of medicine in your body.

Q. What if I miss to take Medronorm?

Ideally, you should not miss any dose during any treatment. Missing a dose may increase the likelihood of breakthrough vaginal bleeding or spotting (blood stain). However, if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the usual dosing schedule.

Q. What are the common side effects which I can experience while taking Medronorm?

The common side effects of Medronorm include headache, nausea (feeling sick), weight gain, breast pain, and unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting. Do not worry, most of these symptoms are temporary. However, if they persist, check with your doctor as soon as possible.

Q. Is Medronorm a contraceptive?

No, Medronorm is not a contraceptive. You should use an effective form of birth control to prevent pregnancy. If you think you have become pregnant while using the medicine, tell your doctor right away to avoid any harm to the baby.
