Introduction of Glylup Tablet

Glylup 5 mg Tablet is a medicine used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps to control blood sugar levels and thus prevent the long-term complications of diabetes. Use this medicine along with a proper diet and exercise for best results. It may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) as a side effect. Monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine.

How to use Glylup Tablet

How Glylup Tablet works

Glylup 5 mg Tablet is an anti-diabetic medication. It works by increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas in order to lower the blood glucose.

Alcohol
CAUTION
It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Glylup 5 mg Tablet. Alcohol intake may increase or decrease the blood sugar lowering action in an unpredictable way
Pregnancy
WEIGH RISKS VS BENEFITS
Glylup 5 mg Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
Glylup 5 mg Tablet is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
Monitoring of the breastfed infant's blood glucose is advisable during maternal therapy with Glylup 5 mg Tablet
Driving
Your ability to drive may be affected if your blood sugar is low or high. If this happens, do not drive.
Kidney
Glylup 5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Glylup 5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
These patients can experience very low blood sugar levels with this medicine, which may take a long time to come back to normal
Liver
Glylup 5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Glylup 5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

What if you miss a dose of Glylup Tablet?

You should skip a dose of Glylup 5 mg Tablet, if a meal is skipped and add a dose of medicine if you eat an extra meal.

  • Take it shortly before or with the first main meal of the day (usually breakfast). Avoid skipping meals.
  • Be careful while driving or operating machinery until you know how Glylup 5 mg Tablet affects you.
  • It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal.
  • Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice with you in case you experience hypoglycemic symptoms such as cold sweats, cool pale skin, tremor, and anxiety.
  • Your doctor may check your liver function regularly. Inform your doctor if you develop symptoms such as abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).

Q. Can you take glipizide with sulfa allergy?

You can take glipizide if you are not allergic to glipizide or drugs from the same class i.e. sulphonylureas, sulphonamides or to any ingredients of the glipizide table. Glipizide is not contraindicated in patient with sulfa allergy.

Q. Can you take glipizide with or without metformin?

You can take glipizide with or without metformin. However, always follow doctor's advice regarding its use.

Q. Can I take glipizide with insulin?

Glylup, when used with insulin, can help to control high blood sugar levels. Taking them together can help to lower the dose of insulin but there could also be an increased risk of hypoglycemia. Dose of these medicines may need to be adjusted along with regular blood sugar level monitoring.

Q. Can I take glipizide with levothyroxine?

When levothyroxine is taken with glipizide, it may compromise the blood sugar controlling effect of glipizide. However, levothyroxine and glipizide can be taken together at a dose and schedule advised by your doctor.

Q. Can I take glipizide with paracetamol (Tylenol)?

Glipizide and paracetamol have no known adverse drug interactions and can be taken together. However, always follow doctor's advice regarding its use.

Q. Can I take glipizide with ibuprofen?

Concomitant administration of glipizide with ibuprofen may cause excessive lowering of the blood sugar level (hypoglycemia). Ibuprofen can be taken with glipizide if indicated provided that you follow the advice of the doctor regarding the dose and schedule of use of drugs.

Q. Does Glylup cause weight gain?

Yes, Glylup can cause weight gain. It is advisable to closely monitor your diet and do regular exercise while taking this medicine. Avoid skipping your meal as it can cause very low blood sugar levels and you may end up snacking or taking a lot of sugars.

Q. Is Glylup a Thiazolidinedione?

No, Glylup is not a Thiazolidinedione, it is a sulfonylurea. However, both are antidiabetic medicines but belong to a different group of medicines.

Q. Is Glylup useful in the management of gestational diabetes?

Glylup is not advised to be used for the management of gestational diabetes. Use of Insulin is advised during pregnancy to control the blood glucose levels.

Q. Can I skip Glylup for few days?

No, Glylup should not be skipped, as it can make your diabetes worse. If, you miss the dose by mistake, take it as soon as you remember.
