How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Skin rash
There are many treatments for a wide range of skin problems. Avoid hot showers or baths because hot water can irritate the skin. Make sure to pat dry your skin after a bath or shower. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Leave the skin exposed to the air as much as possible. Do not use perfumed soaps or deodorants. Water containing chlorine can make most skin problems worse, so avoid swimming. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke and caffeine as it may also make itching worse. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Always use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Moisturizers can be used regularly to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better within a week, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Pain
Some people use herbal remedies, acupuncture and psychological therapies to manage pain. Using hot and cold compress can also help reduce the pain temporarily. Ask your doctor about suitable painkillers if it bothers you or does not go away.
  • Coping with Joint stiffness
Try to keep your joints moving. Get some gentle exercise like walking or cycling. Using hot and cold treatments on the joints can help reduce pain temporarily. Concentrate on your breathing when you are in pain. Try to get enough sleep. Practice some relaxation techniques or mediation. Avoid smoking as it can worsen your condition. Losing weight can make a big difference to the amount of pain. Ask your doctor to recommend some suitable painkillers if the pain bothers you or does not go away.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation)
Massaging the numb area can help improve blood flow and provide relief. Try warming your hands and feet if they are cold. In case they are hot, try cooling them down. Get plenty of rest as lack of proper sleep may worsen the condition. Reducing stress, avoiding alcohol, exercising regularly, and getting enough vitamins and nutrients through your diet can also make you feel better.
  • Coping with Hair loss
Use gentle hair products such as baby shampoo. Use a soft brush and comb gently. Avoid using hairdryers, curling tongs or hair straighteners and pat your hair dry after washing. Do not color your hair. Protect your scalp by covering your head in the sun. It is necessary to not take the stress and eat a balanced, nutritious diet as it is vital for the health of your hair.

Q. My sister is taking Thyrosim for overactive thyroid gland. She frequently gets sore throat and stops and restarts the treatment again and again. Is there any risk if she continues to take Thyrosim when she has sore throat?

Very rarely, Thyrosim interferes with the bone marrow and causes a drastic drop in white blood cells. These white blood cells are a part of the body's defense against bacterial infections, such as sore throats. So, a sore throat can sometimes be the first clue that Thyrosim is affecting the bone marrow. Your sister should contact her doctor and get a blood test. If blood test shows her white blood cell count to be normal, then she can continue Thyrosim. If not, she should stop the treatment after consulting the doctor.

Q. If I am planning my pregnancy, can I continue taking Thyrosim?

No, it is advisable not to take Thyrosim during pregnancy as it may cause abnormalities in your baby. You should consult your doctor because if your thyroid hormone levels are not controlled, chances of birth defects in your baby are much more. In case Thyrosim is the only option for you, your doctor will prescribe the lowest possible dose, which will be regulated according to your condition. You can stop it 3-4 weeks before delivery to reduce chances of complications in your baby.
