Product introduction

Ritulasta Injection is given as an injection under the supervision of doctor. You must take it in a dose as advised by the doctor. Your doctor will decide what dose is necessary and how often you need to take it. This will depend on what you are being treated for and may change from time to time. You should take it exactly as your doctor has advised. Taking it in the wrong way or taking too much can cause very serious side effects. It may take several weeks or months for you to see or feel the benefits but do not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to.

The most common side effects of this medicine include headache, weakness, edema, infection, and hair loss. This medicine may reduce the number of blood cells (decrease red blood and white blood cells) in your blood, thereby, increasing the susceptibility to infections. Regular blood tests are required to check your blood cells along with hepatitis B.

Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, liver, or planning surgery or vaccination or are taking any medicines to treat infections. Many other medicines can affect, or be affected by, this medicine so let your doctor know all medications you are using. This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The use of effective contraception by both males and females during treatment is important to avoid pregnancy.

Quick tips

It is given as a drip (intravenous infusion) by your doctor or nurse.
You may be given some painkillers, antihistamine and possibly steroids before the drip to help prevent infusion reaction.
Your doctor may get blood tests done to check for hepatitis B before treatment and to monitor your blood cells during treatment with this medicine.
Inform your doctor immediately if you notice any signs of infection such as fever, sore throat or rash.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding.
Inform your doctor if you have any heart rhythm problems, if you are having surgery or if you plan to get any vaccinations.

Pregnancy

Ritulasta Injection is not recommended during pregnancy as there is positive evidence of fetal risk based on animal studies. However, it may still be prescribed by a doctor in situations where the benefits outweigh the risks.

Breast feeding

CAUTION

Ritulasta Injection should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from the body.

Driving

CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR

It is not known whether Ritulasta Injection alters the ability to drive. Do not drive if you experience any symptoms that affect your ability to concentrate and react. Please consult your doctor.

Kidney

CAUTION

Ritulasta Injection should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment may be needed.

Liver

CAUTION

Ritulasta Injection should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment may be needed.
Use of Ritulasta Injection is not recommended in patients with the active liver disease or those who had viral hepatitis as it can reactivate the infection.

Interaction with drugs

Taking Ritulasta with any of the following medicines can modify the effect of either of them and cause some undesirable side effects

Life-threatening

Herpes Zoster / Shingles Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted) (Injection Route)

Do not use Rituximab with Herpes Zoster / Shingles Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted). If Rituximab is essential, ensure a gap of at least 12 months after discontinuing Herpes Zoster / Shingles Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted). Please consult your doctor.

Severe

Cholera Vaccine (Inactivated) (Oral Route)

Do not use Rituximab with Cholera Vaccine (Inactivated). If Rituximab is essential, ensure a gap of at least 12 months after discontinuing Cholera Vaccine (Inactivated). Please consult your doctor.

Severe

Purified Vi Polysaccharide Typhoid Vaccine (Injection Route)

Do not use Rituximab with Purified Vi Polysaccharide Typhoid Vaccine. If Rituximab is essential, ensure a gap of at least 12 months after discontinuing Purified Vi Polysaccharide Typhoid Vaccine. Please consult your doctor.

Moderate

Clozapine (Oral Route)

Your doctor may monitor your blood cell count and adjust the doses as per the observations.

Human Papillomavirus Bivalent (Types 16 and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant (Injection Route)

Yes. Some people may have serious or life-threatening reactions during, or within 24 hours of receiving Ritulasta Injection, including breathing difficulty, swelling, dizziness, or sudden drops in blood pressure. This is why the first dose is given slowly and under close supervision.

Does Ritulasta Injection increase my risk of infections?

Ritulasta Injection can weaken your immune defenses and increase the chance of infections, including serious viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. Rare but severe infections such as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a brain infection, have been reported. Call your doctor if you develop fever, confusion, weakness, or new neurological symptoms.

Can Ritulasta Injection reactivate old infections like hepatitis B?

Yes. Ritulasta Injection can reactivate the hepatitis B virus in people who previously had the infection. This can be life-threatening. Doctors routinely test for hepatitis B before beginning therapy, and may do regular blood checks during treatment.

Does Ritulasta Injection affect the heart?

Some people experience irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or low blood pressure during Ritulasta Injection infusion. Those with heart problems may need extra monitoring. Report any chest discomfort or unusual heartbeat immediately.

Are there people who need extra caution before getting Ritulasta Injection?

Yes. Before starting Ritulasta Injection, let your doctor know if you have heart disease, lung problems, a current infection, a history of hepatitis B, low immune function, or recent or planned vaccines. These conditions may require additional testing or treatment adjustments.
