Mext 2.5 mg Tablet is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

How to use Mext Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Mext 2.5 mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Mext Tablet works

Mext 2.5 mg Tablet is an immunosuppressant. In rheumatoid arthritis, it works by decreasing the activity of body's immune system. This decreases swelling, reduces pain and stiffness, and improves function. In psoriasis, it works by slowing down the rapid growth of skin cells.

Alcohol
CAUTION
It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Mext 2.5 mg Tablet. Taking Methotrxate with alcohol increases the risk of liver damage.
Pregnancy
CAUTION
Mext 2.5 mg Tablet is highly unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Human and animal studies have shown significant adverse effects on the foetus. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
UNSAFE
Mext 2.5 mg Tablet is unsafe to use during lactation. Data suggests that the drug may cause toxicity to the baby, or the mother is suffering from a condition in which breastfeeding is not advisable.
Driving
Mext 2.5 mg Tablet may make you feel dizzy, drowsy or affect your vision. Do not drive until your vision is clear.
Kidney
CAUTION
Mext 2.5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Mext 2.5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Regular monitoring of kidney function test is advised while you are taking this medicine.
Liver
CAUTION
Mext 2.5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Mext 2.5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Mext 2.5 mg Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it may increase the risk of side effects.
  • It can be harmful to an unborn baby. Avoid pregnancy for at least 6 months after your last dose.

Q. Can Mext cause mouth ulcers?

Yes, in fact a sore mouth and mouth ulcers are sometimes side effects of Mext therapy. Taking folic acid along with this medicine may help in reducing the ulcers. Ask your doctor if the dose can be reduced as dose reduction may further help in reducing the ulcers.

Q. Why do I have to take folic acid with Mext?

Folic acid is required to make new cells in the body and Mext decreases the folic acid levels in the body. By taking folic acid some of the common side effects, like mouth ulcers, hair loss, nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, fatigue, anemia and liver problems can be reduced.

Q. Why do I need to take regular blood tests while taking Mext?

Regular blood tests will help your doctor to check your response to Mext and monitor you for side effects. You will need to regularly check your liver function and your blood counts -white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Your doctor may also order additional tests depending on the results.

Q. Can Mext use make me more prone to infections?

Mext may decrease the activity of your immune system. As a result, you may develop serious infections. There have been rare reports of serious lung infections with Mext use. If you have an active infection, Mext should be used with extreme caution.

Q. Can Mext affect fertility?

Yes, it may affect fertility in both males and females. There maybe a decrease in sperm count in males and menstrual disturbances in females. These effects are reversible and disappear once the therapy is discontinued.

Q. What to do if I am planning to become pregnant and my husband is taking Mext?

You should avoid pregnancy if your husband is taking Mext. Also, avoid pregnancy for a minimum of 3 months after the therapy as it can lead to serious fetal abnormalities.
