Introduction

Cetadep 10mg Tablet is a type of antidepressant belonging to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) group of medicines. It is prescribed to treat depression, where it helps to make you feel better and prevent new episodes of depression. This medicine is also used to treat panic disorder.

Cetadep 10mg Tablet can be taken with or without food. The dose and how often you need it will be decided by your doctor so that you get the right amount to control your symptoms. Your doctor may start you on a lower dose and increase it gradually. Do not change the dose or stop taking it without talking to your doctor, even if you feel well. Doing so may make your condition worse or you may suffer from unpleasant withdrawal symptoms (anxiety, restlessness, palpitations, dizziness, sleep disturbances, etc).

To get the most benefit, take this medicine regularly at the same time each day. Your doctor may advise you to take it in the morning if you have trouble sleeping. It may take a few weeks before you start feeling better. Let your doctor know if you do not see any improvement even after 4 weeks.

Some common side effects of this medicine include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dry mouth, increased sweating, insomnia (difficulty in sleeping), decreased sexual drive, delayed ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction. Some people may experience sleepiness after taking this medicine. Let your doctor know straight away if you develop any sudden worsening of mood or any thoughts about harming yourself.

Before taking Cetadep 10mg Tablet, you should tell your doctor if you have epilepsy (seizure disorder or fits), diabetes, liver or kidney disease, any heart problems, or are currently taking medicines for depression known as MAO inhibitors. These may affect your treatment. Please tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking to make sure you are safe.

Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatry
Based in your clinical history, your doctor plans the type of medicine and it's dose and duration. For first episode of anxiety/ depression/ panic, the usual maintenance phase is 6 months of asymptomatic period, after which medicines can be gradually tapered. But treatment may need to continue longer depending on severity and frequency of episodes. To take any decision to change medication or stop them, several factors have to be taken in account for which regular follow up with your psychiatrist is important. For second opinion, seek a proper consultation with another psychiatrist and take along your previous prescriptions.

FAQs

Q. What is Cetadep used for? How does it work?

Cetadep belongs to a class of medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Cetadep is used to treat depression and panic disorder. It helps to improve your energy levels and elevates your mood. This medication works by restoring the balance of a chemical substance (serotonin) in the brain which helps to relieve depression and symptoms of panic disorder such as excessive fear, sweating, rapid heart rate, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, chills etc.

Q. Does Cetadep make you gain weight?

Weight changes may be seen while using Cetadep, so monitor your weight closely. Cetadep belongs to a class of medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Although SSRIs are associated with weight loss at first, long-term use of SSRIs may cause an increase in the weight. Long-term use is considered when the treatment lasts longer than six months. If these weight changes bother you, please consult your doctor.

Q. Can you drink alcohol while taking Cetadep?

No, it is advised not to take alcohol while taking Cetadep. Cetadep can cause sleepiness or may affect your ability to make decisions, think clearly, or react quickly. And taking alcohol with this medicine will only worsen these side effects. Therefore, you must avoid alcohol if you are on Cetadep.

Q. Can Cetadep cause abnormal heartbeat or arrhythmia?

Yes, Cetadep has been found to cause prolongation of the QT interval (a type of ECG abnormality) that can lead to arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat or heart rhythm), which can be dangerous. However, this is very rare according to scientific research reports. Moreover, abnormalities in electrolyte levels (such as potassium and magnesium) may also increase the risk of abnormalities in the heartbeat of people suffering from heart problems. Such people must have an ECG review, before as well as during treatment with Cetadep. However, the final decision will be only made by your doctor, after analyzing your health condition and considering all possible risks and benefits of this medicine.

Q. What are the side effects of Cetadep?

The most common side effects of Cetadep are low sexual desire, vomiting, insomnia (difficulty in sleeping), orthostatic hypotension (sudden lowering of blood pressure on standing), anorgasmia (decreased orgasm), nausea, weight gain, erectile dysfunction, stomach upset, and restlessness. Please consult your doctor if these do not resolve or worry you. Your doctor will suggest ways to prevent or treat these side effects.

Q. Is it better to take Cetadep in the morning or at night?

It is usually recommended to take Cetadep once a day in the morning since it can keep you awake if taken late at night. You can take it with or without food. You should prefer taking it at the same time each day so that you remember to take it.
