Prescription Required

Overview

Introduction

Celexa 20mg Tablet is a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It is used in the treatment of depression and panic disorder. This medicine helps by increasing the levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain which improves the mood.

Celexa 20mg Tablet can be taken with or without food but take it at the same time each day to get the most benefit. The dose and how often you need it will be decided by your doctor so that you get the right amount to control your symptoms. It may be increased gradually. If you have trouble sleeping it may be best to take this medicine in the morning. It may take a few weeks before you start to feel better. Do not change the dose or stop taking it without talking to your doctor, even if you feel well. Your condition may get worse or you may suffer unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Let your doctor know if you do not see any improvement after four weeks.

Some common side effects of this medicine include low sexual desire, nausea, headache, vomiting, and insomnia (difficulty sleeping). It may also cause dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Remember to inform the doctor if you develop any unusual changes in mood as it may lead to suicidal thoughts. Some people may also experience rapid weight gain but it is not common.

Before taking it, you should tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, heart problems, glaucoma, drug addiction or bipolar disorder. These may affect your treatment. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult their doctor before taking it. Some other medicines may affect the way this medicine works, especially other antidepressants and medicines called MAO inhibitors. Based on your clinical history, your doctor plans the type of medicine and it's dose and duration. For first episode of anxiety/ depression/ panic, the usual maintenance phase is 6 months of asymptomatic period, after which medicines can be gradually tapered. But treatment may need to continue longer depending on severity and frequency of episodes. Treatment for Recurrent Depressive Disorder , psychotic disorders, Bipolar Affective Disorder and OCD usually lasts for much longer. To monitor any potential side effects and to take any decision to change medication or stop them, several factors have to be taken in account for which regular follow up with your psychiatrist is important. For second opinion, seek a proper consultation with another psychiatrist and take along your previous prescriptions. Since fluoxetine has a long half life, it can be stopped immediately.
