Aredronet 90mg Injection

Overview

Introduction

Aredronet 90mg Injection is used to treat high levels of a mineral called calcium in people who have cancer. It is also used to treat or prevent weakening of the bones. Using this medicine can reduce your risk of breaking bones.

Aredronet 90mg Injection is given by a doctor or nurse. You will not need to do this yourself. How much you are given, and how often, will be decided by your doctor. It may just be a single injection but if you are being treated for bone problems caused by the spread of cancer you may need regular injections. Your doctor will ask you to drink plenty of water before the injection, to avoid getting dehydrated. It may take several days to get the full benefit of this drug. Aredronet 90mg Injection is only part of a programme of treatment that may also include changes to your diet and taking calcium and vitamin supplements.

The most common side effects include headache, back pain, muscle pain, indigestion, diarrhea and heartburn. These are usually mild and will disappear after a short time. If they do not go away, tell your doctor. Aredronet 90mg Injection can cause serious kidney problems, especially if you are dehydrated, if you take diuretic medicine (water pills), or if you already have kidney disease. It can also cause low levels of calcium in the blood and pain in the mouth or jaw. These are serious side effects and need urgent medical attention. Tell your doctor straight away.

You should not be given this medicine if you are breastfeeding. Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or low calcium levels. Also let your doctor know what other drugs you are taking. Some of them may affect, or be affected by, this injection, especially medicines used to treat severe infections and medicines used to treat cancer and osteoporosis. You may need frequent medical tests to check your kidney function and mineral levels. Avoid smoking or try to quit as smoking can reduce your bone mineral density, making fractures more likely. Drinking large amounts of alcohol can also cause bone loss and should be avoided.

Uses of Aredronet Injection

  • High calcium levels in the blood

Side effects of Aredronet Injection

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Aredronet

  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Musculoskeletal (bone, muscle or joint) pain
  • Heartburn
  • Diarrhea

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Back pain
Stay as active as possible and try to continue your daily activities. Do not rest for long periods. Try exercises and stretches specifically designed for back pain. Walking, swimming, yoga and pilates may also be helpful. Taking baths with salt water after exercise may also reduce the pain. Hot or cold compression packs and gentle back massage can give short-term relief. Take anti-inflammatory painkillers if you need to. Back pain normally gets better on its own but if it is severe or lasts more than a couple of weeks, you should see a doctor.
  • Coping with Musculoskeletal (bone, muscle or joint) pain
Tell your doctor straight away because sometimes the muscle pain may be a sign of something more serious. A lower dosage or a different medication might be needed. Try to relax the cramping muscle by stretching it and holding the stretch. You might massage the muscle or apply a heat pad to the area after stretching. Avoid exercising too much. Stay well-hydrated. Do not take over-the-counter pain relievers unless the doctor prescribes it. Your doctor may also suggest taking supplements, such as calcium, magnesium oxide or potassium oxide depending on your needs.
  • Coping with Heartburn
Avoid foods that irritate the stomach such as alcohol, carbonated soft drinks, citrus, coffee, fatty foods or tomatoes. Eat or drink slowly. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. The reason being, large meals fill the stomach and put pressure, causing reflux. Quit smoking if you smoke, lose weight if you are overweight and avoid tight waistbands. Ask your doctor about medicines to treat this condition such as antacids. Do not lie down immediately after eating and wait for at least three hours before lying down after a meal. Raise the head of your bed. Talk to your doctor if your condition does not improve, they may be able to reduce the dosage or switch you to another medicine.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.

FAQs

Q. What does Aredronet do?

Aredronet helps in preventing breakdown of the bones. Bone is continuously being broken down and regenerated by special kinds of bone cells by a process called remodelling or turnover. However, conditions like bone stress and bone marrow edema may create pain and imbalance in this daily turnover. Aredronet acts in the areas with increased bone turnover, decreases this process of breakdown and thereby reduces the pain and discomfort associated with it.

Q. How is Aredronet administered?

Aredronet should be administered under the supervision of a doctor or a trained healthcare professional and should not be self-administered. It is given as a 1-2 hour infusion by a drip into a vein in your arm. The dose will depend on the condition you are being treated for and will be decided by your doctor. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully to get maximum benefit from Aredronet.

Q. How often will I be given Aredronet?

Your dose of Aredronet will be decided by your doctor depending on your condition. Usually, an individual requires 1-3 doses of Aredronet. However, the exact dose and its frequency will depend on your illness and how well you respond to the treatment.

Q. Is Aredronet safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No, Aredronet may not be safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Although Aredronet does not affect the fertility of women or the sperm count in males, it is best to consult your doctor before taking Aredronet. In general, avoid Aredronet if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid any harmful effects on the baby. There is not enough data available to know the exact effect of Aredronet on the unborn baby or via breast milk. Also, women who are taking Aredronet are advised to avoid pregnancy after 6 months of completing treatment with Aredronet.. This is because traces of Aredronet stays in the bones for long periods of time and may be released during this time which can cause harm to the baby.

Q. Does Aredronet cause hair loss?

Yes, Aredronet can cause hair loss, but this is not a common side effect. If you experience hair loss while taking this medication immediately report to your doctor and follow the advice given.

Q. Is Aredronet safe?

Aredronet is safe if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Take it exactly as directed and do not skip any dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully and let your doctor know if any of the side effects bother you.

Q. What other lifestyle changes should I make?

To get maximum benefit from Aredronet, there are certain lifestyle changes that you must adhere to. Include some calcium or Vitamin D rich foods for bone strength. Try to spend more time in sunlight to get natural vitamin D. Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption as they may harm your bones. You can take up an exercise regime such as walking and low-impact aerobics as they are good for your bones. Similarly, you can try strength-training exercises where you use your own body weight which in turn improve bone health.
