Uses of Amitryptyline Tablet

Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet is used for depression and neuropathic pain. It is used in patients intolerant of or unresponsive to alternative treatment options for depression.

How to use Amitryptyline Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Amitryptyline Tablet works

Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet is a tricyclic antidepressant. It works by increasing the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that help in regulating mood and treat depression. It also stops the movement of pain signals from nerves to the brain thereby relieving neuropathic pain (pain from damaged nerves).

Pregnancy

Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation

Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet is probably unsafe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggest that the drug could represent a significant risk to the baby.
Driving
Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet may impair your alertness which may affect your ability to drive.
Kidney
Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet is probably safe to use in patients with kidney disease. Limited data available suggests that dose adjustment of Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet may not be needed in these patients. Please consult your doctor.
Liver
CAUTION
Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

What if you miss a dose of Amitryptyline Tablet?

If you miss a dose of Amitryptyline 10 mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

I m suffering due to pain in left testis, so I visited pgimer Chandigarh in urology deptt. There I had gone for dopler ultrasound testis and its reports are normal Now whenever I lay down at bed I felt a smaal lump in testis,when I touchdown it, the pain radiates in whole left testis Now I m feeling pain sometimes in both tastis Is it a sign of early vericoseal Or something else Pls. You may gain weight once your treatment with Amitryptyline begins. You can manage your weight gain by eating a healthy diet, consuming low-calorie food and including more vegetables and fruits in your diet. Regular physical exercise will also be very helpful.

Q. Is there anything I need to be careful about while on therapy with Amitryptyline?

Amitryptyline may cause drowsiness and dizziness, especially in the beginning of the treatment. Do not drive or work with tools or machinery if your alertness is affected. It is not advisable to drink alcohol during treatment with this medicine as it might increase sleepiness.

Q. Can the use of Amitryptyline affect my sex life?

Yes, Amitryptyline can affect sex life in both men and women. It may cause decreased sexual desire or you may experience discomfort during intercourse. Men may experience inability to develop or maintain erection during sexual activity and may be unable to have orgasm. If you notice these symptoms, do not stop taking the medicine but consult your doctor.

Q. I have been taking Amitryptyline for depression since a week and now I feel that my life has come to end and sometimes I want to harm myself. What should I do? Is it because of the medicine?

You should immediately consult your doctor or go to the hospital. Your suicidal tendencies may have increased because of the medicine or because of your disease. This is more common in people who previously had suicidal tendencies or are young adults (less than 25 years old). Amitryptyline takes about 2 weeks to show its effect but may take longer, however, it may differ from individual to individual. Therefore, when you start taking Amitryptyline, you may have thoughts about killing or harming yourself.

Q. Can Amitryptyline cause urinary problems?

Yes, Amitryptyline can cause urinary problems. It is more commonly seen in elderly patients who are more than 65 years old. The patient may develop urinary tract infection or may complain of weakness. You should consult your doctor if you develop these symptoms.

Q. If my pain is not relieved, can I take more than the recommended dose?

No, Amitryptyline should be strictly used only as prescribed by the doctor. If the dose exceeds, you may develop drowsiness, confusion, difficulty in speech, dry mouth, tiredness, difficulty in walking, fever, difficulty in breathing, blue discoloration of the skin and decreased heart beat. Your pain may not be relieved because Amitryptyline takes about 2 weeks to show its effect, but may take longer. The time differs from individual to individual. Consult your doctor if your symptoms are not relieved.

Q. Does Amitryptyline cause any effect on pregnancy or the newborn?

Do not take Amitryptyline during pregnancy unless recommended by the doctor. If you take this medicine during the last trimester of the pregnancy, the newborn may develop symptoms such as irritability, rigidity, irregular body movements, irregular breathing, poor drinking, loud crying, difficulty in urinating and constipation.

You may start feeling better after 2 weeks of starting Amitryptyline. However, it may take 4-6 weeks to see full benefits of the medicine.

No, do not stop taking Amitryptyline even if the pain is relieved. Take Amitryptyline as per your doctor’s advice. Stopping the medicine suddenly may cause unpleasant symptoms like headache, feeling unwell, sleeplessness and irritability. Consult your doctor for duration of the treatment since the dose of Amitryptyline needs to be reduced gradually.
