8 Simple Ways To Protect Your Hearing

Most of the times, deafness is caused by damage to the tiny hair cells in the inner ear. This damage can be caused by too much noise, and it is permanent. Noise related hearing loss is usually an irreversible damage.

Nowadays, noise related haring loss is usually caused by overuse of gadgets like MP3 players, ipods, as well as noisy clubs. That is the reason why hearing loss is increasingly affecting younger people.If you work or frequently spend time in a noisy place or listen to loud music a lot, you could be losing your hearing without even realizing it.

SO, HOW LOUD IS TOO LOUD?

Noise is measured in decibels (dB). The higher the number, the louder the noise.

-Normal conversation happens at about 65dB.

-Experts say that noise levels above 105dB can damage your hearing if you are exposed to it  for more than 15 minutes each week.

-But even lower levels like  80dB and 90dB can cause permanent damage if you are exposed to them for hours every day.

A simple rule is that if you can’t talk to someone 2 meters away without shouting, the noise level could be damaging.

AND, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOUR HEARING?

1 .  Use Noise Cancelling Headphones

Noise cancelling headphones help in reducing ambient noise. Though they are expensive, but t is an investment that is worth it. Doctors also recommend using  noise reducing/cancelling headphones when you are mowing the lawn, taking a flight, or when you are in an environment that can  damage hearing.

2 . Follow The 60:60 Rule

To enjoy music from your music device safely, follow the 60:60 rule. It means  listening to your music at 60% of the maximum volume for not more than 60 minutes a day.

3 . Turn The Volume Down

Most youngsters may disagree,  but louder isn’t better. The louder the music, the more likely it will become distorted. In fact, music sounds better at lower levels that don’t harm your ears. So drop the volume on your TV, cell phone, iPod and car stereo and give your ears the break they deserve.

4 . Opt For Ear Protectors

Wear ear protectors (earplugs or earmuffs) if you are using noisy equipment such as power drills, saws, sanders or lawn mowers

5 . Use The Car Music With Caution

when you are listening to music in a confined space, you increase the risk of hearing damage. Do not listen to music too loud for too long.

6 . Do Not Work In A Noisy Environment 

If you are working in an environment that is very noisy, speak to your human resources (HR) department or your manager and ask for advice on reducing the noise and getting hearing protection.

7 . Give Your Ears Time to Recover

Give your ears some time to recover after they have been exposed to loud noise. Studies suggest that  your ears need at least 16 hours  to recover after spending around two hours in 100dB sound, for example in a club. By reducing the recovery time you increase your risk of permanent deafness.

8 .  Consult A Doctor

Consult a doctor as soon as you experience any hearing problem or hearing loss. He will conduct certain tests to recognize any hearing defects and may recommend hearing aids or  assistive listening devices that can protect your hearing from further damage.
