Here are few diet tips for people with hypothyroidism that can help control the condition.
1. Eat a low-fat diet. Low levels of thyroid hormone can slow down your metabolism and weight management is an important part of your treatment. If you eat a diet high in fats, it can not only make you put on weight but also interfere with the thyroid function, making it worse. Hence, it is advised to cut down on processed and fried foods.
2. Include Vitamin D rich foods. According to a 2013 study published in the International Journal of Health Sciences, there is an association between Vitamin D deficiency and hypothyroidism. Vitamin D and calcium were found to be associated with normal levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), a hormone that regulates thyroid gland functioning. 5. Avoid cruciferous vegetables. Yes, it is advised that people with low levels of thyroid should restrict the intake of cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. These vegetables release a compound known as goitrin, when broken down. This compound can interfere with the function of the thyroid hormones, further worsening the condition.
