Beta-2 Microglobulin, Serum

The Beta-2 Microglobulin, Serum test is a blood test that measures the concentration of beta-2-microglobulin in the blood, a protein found on the surface of most cells. It is primarily used as a tumor marker to evaluate disease severity and prognosis in multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer) and certain other blood-related disorders.

Understanding Beta-2 Microglobulin, Serum
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a small protein present on the surface of most nucleated cells and is shed into the bloodstream during normal cell turnover. Its levels rise in conditions involving increased cell destruction, immune system activation, or impaired kidney function. Measuring B2M in the blood helps assess disease activity and progression, especially in hematologic cancers like multiple myeloma and lymphomas.
The Beta-2 Microglobulin, Serum test may be recommended for individuals suspected of having multiple myeloma or other hematologic conditions, as well as for patients with diagnosed multiple myeloma to track disease progression and response to therapy. It can also help assess kidney function in certain medical conditions.
Overnight fasting is preferred for this test, but it is not mandatory. Inform your doctor about all the medications and supplements that you are currently taking, as these may affect the test results.
Test result ranges are approximate and may differ slightly between labs depending on the methodology and laboratory guidelines. Do not self-medicate, and always consult a doctor to understand the test results correctly.
Please note: This is an outsourced test. The sample for this test is collected by TATA 1MG and processed at a NABL accredited partnered lab.
What does Beta-2 Microglobulin, Serum measure?
The Beta-2 Microglobulin, Serum test measures the concentration of beta-2-microglobulin in the blood. B2M levels provide insight into both cellular activity and how effectively the kidneys are clearing proteins from the blood. High levels may indicate advanced stages of multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, kidney disease, or other disorders affecting the immune system. Elevated B2M levels are often associated with poorer prognosis and can guide more aggressive treatment strategies. Low or normal levels typically indicate healthy kidney function and no significant increase in cell turnover from malignancy or immune activation.
By measuring serum B2M, doctors can evaluate disease progression, monitor treatment response, and support diagnosis and prognosis planning for blood cancers and related disorders.
