Overview

Introduction

Tryptomer 50mg Tablet is used in the treatment of depression. Different doses of this medicine help in treating and preventing different problems such as chronic nerve-related (neuropathic) pain, migraine, tension-type headache and nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) by older children (6 years and above).

Tryptomer 50mg Tablet is known as a tricyclic antidepressant. It is normally taken before bedtime because it can make you feel sleepy. It can be taken with or without food. The dose and how often you need to take it will be decided by your doctor so that you get the right amount to control your symptoms. It may be increased gradually. This medicine may not work straight away and it could be several weeks before you get the full effects.

How long you need to use it will depend on what you are taking it for, but it is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Do not suddenly stop taking it without consulting your doctor as it may make your condition worse. Your dose may be modified or gradually decreased before stopping the medication.

The most common side effects of this medicine include increased heart rate, constipation, dizziness, feeling thirsty or tired, dry mouth and difficulty urinating. It may also make you aggressive or confused and can lead to weight gain in some people. This medicine is not addictive, but you can experience additional side effects (withdrawal symptoms) if you stop taking it suddenly. Most of the common side effects tend to be mild. Your doctor may be able to suggest ways of preventing or reducing side effects if they bother you or do not go away. Serious side effects associated with this medicine are rare.

Uses of Tryptomer Tablet

Benefits of Tryptomer Tablet

In Depression

Tryptomer 50mg Tablet works by affecting the balance of certain chemicals (such as serotonin) in the brain. It helps improve mood and feelings of wellbeing, relieve anxiety and tension, helps you sleep better, and increase your energy level. It is an effective antidepressant but may cause drowsiness. You need to take it regularly as it is prescribed for it to be most effective and should not stop taking it suddenly.

In Neuropathic pain

Tryptomer 50mg Tablet helps in relieving neuropathic pain caused by nerve damage in certain conditions. These may include painful diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, or spinal cord disease. It works by affecting chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. By relieving pain, it helps improve your quality of life.

In Migraine

Tryptomer 50mg Tablet helps prevent migraine by changing the way that your nerves receive pain signals. By preventing and reducing the frequency of headaches, it can help you carry out your daily activities and have a better quality of life.

Side effects of Tryptomer Tablet

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Tryptomer

  • Constipation
  • Difficulty in urination
  • Dryness in mouth
  • Increased heart rate
  • Orthostatic hypotension (sudden lowering of blood pressure on standing)
  • Weight gain
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Agitation
  • Nasal congestion (stuffy nose)

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Constipation
Try to eat foods which are high in fiber such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals to increase the bulk and consistency of bowel movements. Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic drinks and stay hydrated to promote healthy digestion. Increasing physical activities such as walking, yoga and regular exercise can also be helpful. If your condition does not improve, you can ask your doctor to prescribe you laxative medicine.
  • Coping with Difficulty in urination
Relax when you try to pee. Don't try to force the flow of urine. If it doesn't happen, try again later. Limit drinks that increase urination such as coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages. Continue to drink plenty of water each day. Gentle massage and hot compression on your lower abdomen can help relax your muscles and may improve your urine flow. Doing exercises that strengthen the bladder muscles such as pelvic exercise will be of help. Distract your attention by thinking about something else. Avoid alcohol and smoking because both can aggravate the condition. Talk to your doctor urgently if you can not pee at all.
  • Coping with Dryness in mouth
Keep a drink available that you can sip through the day. Rinse your mouth with warm salted water and chew sugarless gum or hard candy. Try breathing through your nose more often than your mouth. Avoid caffeinated beverages, smoking and alcohol because they can make your condition worse. Use lip balm if your lips are also dry. Try to avoid foods that are acidic (like lemons), spicy, salty or sugary. If this side effect bothers you or does not go away, talk to your doctor about artificial saliva products or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Increased heart rate
Breathe in slowly through your nostrils and then breathe out through your mouth. Repeat this until you feel calm. Try sitting cross-legged and drink plenty of water. Splash cold water or apply a cold towel or ice pack on your face for 20-30 seconds. It is important to make sure that you are not taking more than the prescribed dose. As a preventive measure, you should limit the amount of alcohol you drink and give up smoking. Also, cut down the amount of coffee, tea or cola you drink. In general, being physically active and eating a healthy well-balanced diet is good advice for any heart condition. If the condition does not improve, consult your doctor as they may need to change you to a different type of medicine.
  • Coping with Weight gain
Try to eat a healthy balanced diet without increasing your portion sizes. Avoid processed meat or poultry and seafood. Eat small, frequent meals and eat slowly. Do not snack on foods that contain a lot of calories such as crisps, cakes, biscuits and sweets. If you feel hungry between meals, eat fruits and vegetables which have low calories. Avoid reaching for a sugary drink if you feel stressed. Fasting once a week can be an effective way to lose weight. Make sure you get enough sleep. With proper diet and lifestyle changes, you might not gain any weight or may gain only a small amount. Even then if it bothers you, ask your doctor if there are any alternative medicines that do not have this side effect.
  • Coping with Aggressive behavior
If you feel this medicine is causing mood or behavior changes, speak to your doctor as you may need a change of medicine. There are also some things you can do yourself. Eat well, do relaxation or deep breathing exercises and practice regular exercise that you enjoy, such as walking, swimming or yoga. Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol and sugar as these can all cause mood swings or make them worse. A good night’s sleep can also help. It often helps to talk to a friend or family member even if you find this difficult. If it bothers you, consult with your doctor.
  • Coping with Agitation
This often disappears when the condition you are being treated for is managed. You could ask your doctor about changing the dose of your medicine or alternatives if it is affecting your daily life or causing you distress. Psychological treatments may be available. Some things you can do to help yourself include stopping smoking, cutting down the amount of alcohol and caffeine you drink, and doing regular exercise. You should also eat a healthy diet and find out how to get sleep if you are having trouble. Try talking to a friend or family member. Calming breathing exercises and other relaxation techniques may also help.
  • Coping with Nasal congestion (stuffy nose)
Try saline spray or nose drops. Taking steam inhalation or placing a warm wet towel on your face can also help. Use a humidifier if the air in your house is too dry. Using an extra pillow at night to lift up your head can also improve your breathing. If your condition does not improve, you should talk to your doctor. The doctor may be able to prescribe you certain over-the-counter medicines that can help improve your condition.

How to use Tryptomer Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Tryptomer 50mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Tryptomer Tablet works

Tryptomer 50mg Tablet is a tricyclic antidepressant. It works by increasing the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that help in regulating mood and treat depression. It also stops the transmission of pain signals from nerves to the brain thereby relieving neuropathic pain (pain from damaged nerves).

Take your medicines as prescribed even if you start feeling better.

Q. Can the use of Tryptomer affect my sex life?

Yes, Tryptomer can affect sex life in both men and women. It may cause decreased sexual desire or you may experience discomfort during intercourse. Men may experience inability to develop or maintain an erection during sexual activity and may be unable to have an orgasm. If you notice these symptoms, do not stop taking the medicine but consult your doctor.

Q. I have been taking Tryptomer for depression since a week and recently I have been wanting to harm myself. What should I do? Is it because of the medicine?

You should immediately consult your doctor or go to the hospital. Your suicidal tendencies may have increased because of your disease or the medicine. Generally, Tryptomer takes about 2 weeks to show its effect but may take longer. Therefore, when you start taking Tryptomer, you may have thoughts about killing or harming yourself. This is more common in people who previously had suicidal tendencies or are young adults (less than 25 years old). However, the effect of medicine is different for every individual.

Q. Can Tryptomer cause urinary problems?

Yes, Tryptomer can cause urinary problems. It is more commonly seen in elderly patients who are more than 65 years old. The patient may face difficulty in passing urine which can further lead to a urinary tract infection. Consult your doctor immediately if you develop these symptoms.

Q. If my pain is not relieved, can I take more than the recommended dose?

No, you should use Tryptomer strictly as prescribed by the doctor. If the dose exceeds, you may develop drowsiness, confusion, difficulty in speech, dry mouth, tiredness, difficulty in walking, fever, difficulty in breathing, blue discoloration of the skin and decreased heartbeat. Your pain may not be relieved because Tryptomer takes about 2 weeks to show its effect, but it may take longer in some cases. The duration of treatment can differ from individual to individual. Consult your doctor if your symptoms are not relieved.

Q. Does Tryptomer cause any effect on pregnancy or the newborn?

Do not take Tryptomer during pregnancy unless recommended by the doctor. Q. Can I stop taking Tryptomer when my pain is relieved?

No, do not stop taking Tryptomer even if the pain is relieved. You should use Tryptomer as advised by the doctor. Stopping the medicine suddenly may cause unpleasant symptoms like headache, feeling unwell, sleeplessness and irritability. Consult your doctor for the duration of the treatment since the dose of Tryptomer needs to be reduced gradually.

Q. How long does Tryptomer take to work?

You may see an improvement in your symptoms after a couple of weeks, although it usually takes between 4 and 6 weeks before you feel the benefits. Do not stop taking Tryptomer after 1 or 2 weeks just because you feel it is not helping your symptoms. Give the medicine at least 6 weeks to work.

Q. How will Tryptomer make me feel?

Antidepressants like Tryptomer help to gradually lift your mood. You may notice that you sleep better and are less anxious. You may worry less about little things that used to bother you. Tryptomer will not make you feel excessively or unusually happy. It will help you feel like yourself again.
