Overview

Introduction of Rifagut Tablet

Rifagut Tablet is an antibiotic. It is used to treat infectious diarrhea and hepatic encephalopathy.

Rifagut Tablet should be taken in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. It is better to take it at the same time each day to get the most benefit and you should keep on taking this medicine for as long as you are prescribed. Stopping it early may make the infection to come back and harder to treat.

Some people may develop side effects like vomiting, headache, fever, dizziness, nausea, and chills. These side effects are usually temporary and go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if these side effects bother you or will not go away. Your urine may become reddish in colour due to Rifagut Tablet. But, it is normal and harmless.

Before starting treatment with this medicine, you should tell doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or suffering from any liver, kidney or heart problems or if you are allergic to any medicine.

  • You have been prescribed Rifagut Tablet for the treatment of infectious diarrhea.
  • It should only be taken for a maximum of three days. If your symptoms do not improve after three days, inform your doctor. Do not take a second course of Rifagut Tablet.
  • It may cause reddish discoloration of urine. This is normal and harmless.
  • Stop taking Rifagut Tablet and inform your doctor if your diarrhoea gets worse or starts to contain blood or mucus.
  • Finish the full course of the medication, even if you feel better. Stopping the course early increases the risk of coming back of the infection.

Q. What does Rifagut do for the liver?

In liver disease, there is an increased growth of bacteria in the intestine which increases the load of toxins travelling through the body. This further increases the possibility of toxins reaching the brain which can cause abnormal brain function. Rifagut slows down the growth of bacteria in the gut, decreasing the symptoms in cases of liver disease.

Q. For how long should you take Rifagut?

The duration for which you may need to take Rifagut will depend upon the disease being treated. If it is prescribed for treatment of traveler's diarrhea, it is usually given for 3 days. When given for irritable bowel syndrome, it is usually given for 14 days.

Q. Can Rifagut cure IBS?

Taking Rifagut can help improve the symptoms and delay the recurrence of the disease. However, it is not sure whether it will cure the disease completely or not. It has been shown that Rifagut can help improve the symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and discomfort. Consult your doctor for exact details on the treatment of IBS.

Q. How long does Rifagut take to work for IBS?

Rifagut usually starts acting within 24 to 48 hours. The symptoms like diarrhea improve gradually after you start taking this medication. Usually, taking Rifagut for 2 weeks relieves the symptoms of IBS. Moreover, it has also been seen that this 2-week course of Rifagut provides relief for up to 10 weeks even after stopping the medication.
