Uses of Riax Tablet

Riax 2.5 mg Tablet is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is used in addition to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages)

How to use Riax Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Riax 2.5 mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Riax Tablet works

Riax 2.5 mg Tablet is an anti-diabetic medication. It works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas and decreasing the hormones that raise blood sugar levels. This reduces the fasting and postmeal sugar levels.

Alcohol
CAUTION
Taking alcohol together with saxagliptin may affect blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.
Pregnancy
PROBABLY SAFE
Riax 2.5 mg Tablet is probably safe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effect on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
Riax 2.5 mg Tablet is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
Driving
Your ability to drive may be affected if your blood sugar is low or high. If this happens, do not drive.
Kidney
CAUTION
Riax 2.5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Riax 2.5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Regular monitoring of kidney function tests is recommended for dose adjustment.
Liver
Riax 2.5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Riax 2.5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
No dose adjustment is recommended for patients with mild to moderate liver disease.

What if you miss a dose of Riax Tablet?

If you miss a dose of Riax 2.5 mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

  • Riax 2.5 mg Tablet is used alone or  together with other diabetes medicines to control blood sugar and avoids long-term complications.
  • You should continue to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take your other diabetes medicines (if prescribed) along with Riax 2.5 mg Tablet.
  • It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal. Monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine. 
  • Chances of weight gain and low blood sugar are lesser as compared to other diabetes medicines.
  • Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice with you in case you experience hypoglycemia symptoms such as cold sweats, cool pale skin, tremor, and anxious feeling.
  • Inform your doctor if you notice joint pains or develop symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and/or vomiting.
  • Take it at the same time every day to help you remember to take it.

Q. Does Riax cause any weight loss (reduction)?
No, Riax neither causes weight loss nor weight gain. It is weight neutral. However, weight gain can be seen when Riax is used with other antidiabetic medicines like thiazolidinediones, sulfonylureas or insulin.
Q. Can Riax cause cancer?
Riax belongs to the group of drugs called incretins which have been associated with pancreatic cancer in some clinical studies. However, a definite evidence that they cause cancer is missing, so, it is advisable to talk to your doctor regarding the same.
Q. Can I use Riax with pioglitazone?
Yes, Riax can be used with pioglitazone. A combined use of the two medicines would be more effective in controlling blood sugar levels than either medicine alone. No drug-drug interactions or any change in side effect profile has been reported compared to when they are used alone.
Q. Is Riax useful in the treatment of parkinsonism?
Riax is seen to be efficacious in the management of parkinsonism in some animal research studies only and is not advised for the management of parkinsonism in humans currently.

Yes, there are some cases of Riax-induced heart failure reported especially in patients with additional risk factors for heart failure. In case the patient develops symptoms of heart failure like increasing shortness of breath, the rapid increase in weight and swelling of the feet (pedal edema). Stop taking Riax and inform your doctor.
Q. How effective is Riax for diabetes mellitus?
Riax is indicated along with dietary modification and exercise in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is seen to significantly reduce blood glucose levels and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) when taken as a single drug or in combination with other anti-diabetic drugs.
Q. Is it beneficial to use Riax with glipizide?
Yes, it is beneficial to take Riax and glipizide. Both are antidiabetic drugs, however, they work in different ways. When taken together, they can help in better control of blood sugar levels. However, the risk of low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) can increase if the dose of glipizide is not adjusted.
