Retop-A 0.025% Gel

Overview

Introduction

Retop-A 0.025% Gel is a form of vitamin A that is used to treat acne which appears as spots or pimples on your face, chest or back. It also helps to smooth rough facial skin and to reduce fine wrinkles on the skin.

Retop-A 0.025% Gel reduces excessive oil production of the skin. Ideally, a pinpoint application at nighttime is recommended for the duration prescribed by your doctor. The amount you need and for how long you need to take it will depend on what you are being treated for. You should normally wash and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of this medicine. Follow your doctor’s instructions. You should not apply it to damaged or broken skin and avoid contact with your mouth, eyes and nose. It may take several weeks for your symptoms to improve but keep using it regularly to get the most benefit. Consult your doctor again if you do not notice any improvement after a few weeks. Using more medicine or applying it more often than prescribed will not make it work any faster and may increase the side effects.

The most common side effects include irritation, dryness and redness of the skin. They are usually mild and improve as your body gets used to the medicine. Drink plenty of water and use moisturizer as it may lead to dryness of the mouth, lips and eyes. Let your doctor know if these side effects bother you or do not go away. Serious side effects with this medicine are rare.

This medicine may make you more sensitive to sunlight so you should limit exposure to the sun if possible. It may make your skin more fragile. It is advised, not to have any waxing (hair removal), or laser treatments during treatment. Pregnant women or women who are planning to get pregnant should not use this medicine as it can lead to birth defects.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Skin irritation
There are many treatments for a wide range of skin problems. Avoid hot showers or baths because hot water can irritate the skin. Make sure to pat dry your skin after a bath or shower. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Leave the skin exposed to the air as much as possible. Do not use perfumed soaps or deodorants. Water containing chlorine can make most skin problems worse, so avoid swimming. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke and caffeine as it may also make itching worse. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Always use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Moisturizers can be used regularly to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better within a week, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
  • Coping with Dry skin
Use mild cleansing creams or soaps rather than harsh or perfumed ones. Use warm water (not hot) and do not spend too long in the bath or shower. Long bathing hours or using harsh soaps can wash away natural oils. Dry your skin gently with a towel and apply moisturizer immediately after washing. Do not use alcohol-based products on your skin. Choose clothing fabrics that will not irritate your skin.
  • Coping with Increased sensitivity to light
If your eyes are sensitive to bright light, use your hand or a hat to reduce glare while outdoors. Try to stay away from bright lights and shiny surfaces. Wearing tinted glasses or sunglasses will also help. Keep lights dimmed inside. Avoid long screen time and take frequent eye breaks from your device or avoid it totally if you can. If your condition does not improve, talk to your doctor. Your doctor may be able to prescribe you eye drops or other medications that can reduce your symptoms.
