Prescription Required

Overview

Introduction

Renin 5mg Tablet belongs to a group of medicines known as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is widely used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure and may be prescribed after a heart attack. It also lowers the chances of having a heart attack or stroke.

Renin 5mg Tablet can be prescribed either alone or in combination with other medicines. It should be taken on an empty stomach. This medicine should be taken at the same time each day to get the most benefit. It is important to continue taking it regularly even if you feel well or even if your blood pressure is controlled. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel ill, but if you stop taking this medicine, your condition could get worse. This is a widely used medicine and is considered safe for long-term use.

Making some changes in your lifestyle will also help lower your blood pressure. These may include regular exercise, losing weight, smoking cessation, reducing alcohol intake, and reducing the amount of salt in your diet as advised by your doctor. The most common side effects of this medicine include feeling dizzy or drowsy, headache, dry cough, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and low blood pressure. Most of these are temporary and resolve with time. Talk to your doctor if any of the side effects bother you or do not go away.

Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have any kidney or liver problems. Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should also consult their doctor before taking it. Your doctor may check your kidney function, blood pressure and potassium levels in your blood at regular intervals while you are taking this medicine.

Dr. Sfurti Mann
Diabetes Specialist
Voglibose and pioglitazone both are medications used for diabetes but there mechanism of action is different and so are their side effects. Voglibose acts to reduce post prandial blood glucose whereas pioglitazone improves insulin sensitivity and improves glycemic control. Voglibose causes gastric side effects and sometimes affects the liver whereas pioglitazone should not be given to patients with heart ailments as it can worsen heart failure.

Do you have any questions related to Renin 5mg Tablet ?

FAQs

Q. What is Renin used for?

Renin is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure and prevent or treat heart failure. It helps reduce the chances of heart attack and stroke in high blood pressure patients. Renin belongs to ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor group of medicines. It relaxes and widens the blood vessels and therefore blood passes more easily through them and heart does not have to work more to push the blood.

Q. Does Renin cause excessive urination? Can it cause kidney damage?

No, Renin is not a diuretic and does not cause excess loss of water through urination. The use of Renin may not affect a normal functioning kidney. However, damage to the kidney may occur when Renin is given with a diuretic. In such case, either the diuretic should be discontinued or its dose should be reduced. If you have severe heart failure or your kidneys are already affected, then there is a risk of kidney failure but timely and appropriate treatment can reverse the damage.

Q. Can use of Renin affect my liver?

In rare cases Renin may cause yellowing of skin and eyes, loss of appetite, and increase in liver enzymes. It can also cause considerable damage to liver and even death. Therefore, if you experience any such symptoms, call your doctor immediately.

Q. Is it safe to use Renin along with hydrochlorthiazide?

You have to be careful when taking Renin with hydrochlorthiazide, as it can further decrease your blood pressure. You may also develop symptoms of renal failure, especially if there is substantial water or salt loss prior to starting Renin. If you face any such issues contact your doctor who will either advice to discontinue hydrochlorothiazide or give a lower dose. The doctor may also advise you Renin in very low doses when used in combination with hydrochlorthiazide.

Q. I am taking ibuprofen for arthritis, is it safe to take Renin along with it?

You should avoid taking ibuprofen and Renin together since there is a risk of kidney damage. Also, this combined usage may reduce the effectiveness of Renin. Consult your doctor for an alternative to ibuprofen.

Q. How long does it take for Renin to start working?

Renin starts reducing blood pressure within few hours. However, it may take few weeks to see full benefits. You may not notice any difference after taking Renin for high blood pressure, it can only be noticed when you get your blood pressure checked. So, keep taking the medicine to feel better. If you are taking Renin for heart failure, it may take few weeks to months before you start feeling better.

Q. How long do I need to take Renin?

You may have to take Renin for long time (even for life time), until and unless any serious side effect starts bothering and deters you from taking it. However, do not stop taking it without the advice of your doctor.

Q. What can happen if I suddenly stop taking Renin?

You should not stop taking Renin without consulting your doctor. Doing this can suddenly increase your blood pressure which may cause a risk of heart attack or stroke. If you experience any side effects, talk to your doctor who will prescribe you another medicine.

Q. Is it safe to take Renin for a long time?

Yes, Renin is generally well tolerated by most people and can be taken for long term. However, its long-term use can sometimes cause your kidneys to not work properly. Your doctor will get regular blood tests done to check whether your kidneys are functioning properly or not.

Q. Can I take Renin before surgery?

Inform your doctor that you are taking Renin, before surgery, especially when the use of general anesthetic (to put you to sleep) is recommended. This is done because Renin can reduce your blood pressure when it is used with an anesthetic. Hence, your doctor may advise you to stop taking Renin 24 hours before surgery.
