Uses of Gliclapack Tablet

Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is used in addition to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

How to use Gliclapack Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet is to be taken with food.

How Gliclapack Tablet works

Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet is an anti-diabetic medication. It works by increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas in order to lower the blood glucose.

Pregnancy

Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
Driving
SAFE
Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet does not usually affect your ability to drive.
Kidney
Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
These patients can experience very low blood sugar levels with this medicine, which may take a long time to come back to normal
Liver
Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

What if you miss a dose of Gliclapack Tablet?

You should skip a dose of Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet, if a meal is skipped and add a dose of medicine if you eat an extra meal.

  • Take it shortly before or with the first main meal of the day (usually breakfast). Avoid skipping meals.
  • Exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take your other diabetes medicines (if prescribed) alongside.
  • Monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine. 
  • Be careful while driving or operating machinery until you know how Gliclapack 40 mg Tablet affects you.
  • It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal. 
  • Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice with you in case you experience hypoglycemic symptoms such as cold sweats, cool pale skin, tremor, and anxiety.
  • Your doctor may check your liver function regularly. Inform your doctor if you develop symptoms such as abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).

Q. Is Gliclapack useful in the management for prediabetes?

Gliclapack is not used for the management of Prediabetes, a condition with blood glucose levels higher than normal but not high enough to label you as diabetic. There are clinical studies available, but the evidence is not strong enough for its use in prediabetes.

Q. Can Gliclapack be given to elderly patients?

Yes, Gliclapack can be given to elderly patients. However, since they are more prone to the risk of low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), a regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is important. Q. Can I skip Gliclapack for a few days?
