Glador 1 Tablet

Prescription Required

Overview

Introduction

Glador 1 Tablet is a medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It belongs to a group of medicines called sulfonylureas and helps control blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. This helps to prevent serious complications of diabetes like kidney damage and blindness.

Glador 1 Tablet may be used alone or along with other medicines. It should be taken just before or with the first meal of the day. Take it regularly at the same time each day to get the maximum benefit. Your doctor will decide what dose is best for you and this may change from time to time according to your blood sugar levels.

Keep taking this medicine, even if you feel well or your blood sugar levels are controlled. If you stop it without consulting your doctor, your blood sugar levels could rise and put you at risk of kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems and loss of limbs. Remember that it is only part of a treatment program that should also include a healthy diet, regular exercise and weight reduction as advised by your doctor. Your lifestyle plays a big part in controlling diabetes.

The most common side effects of taking this medicine include low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), nausea, headache, and dizziness. Make sure you recognize the signs of having low blood sugar levels, such as sweating, dizziness, headache, and shaking and know how to deal with them. To prevent this, it is important to have regular meals and always carry a fast-acting source of glucose such as sugary food or fruit juice with you. Drinking alcohol can also increase your risk of low blood sugar levels and hence should be avoided. Some people may experience an increase in weight with this medicine.

You should not take it if you have type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis (high levels of acid in your blood), or if you have severe kidney or liver disease. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart disease, thyroid disease or some hormonal conditions, as it may not be suitable. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult their doctor before taking it. Your blood sugar levels should be checked regularly and your doctor may also advise blood tests to monitor your blood cell counts and liver function.

Diabetes Ireland is delighted to hear of the Harvard success and congratulate Professor Melton and colleagues on figuring out the complex series of steps necessary to turn stem cells into beta cells. Hopefully, they can negotiate the regulations for mass production so that an abundant supply of beta cells is available an new and innovative methods will be developed to cure/treat Type 1 diabetes. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune condition whereby the body kills off its own beta (insulin producing) cells resulting in the need for daily insulin administration through the skin. Replacing beta cells in the first step towards a cure, but the replaced beta cells need to be protected from the body?s autoimmune response. This means protecting them in a coating or taking drugs to prevent the response (possible worse side effects than diabetes).

FAQs

Q. Does Glador make you sleepy?

Glador itself does not cause sleepiness. However, it may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when used with other anti-diabetes medicine. Because of this you may feel sleepy or problems in sleeping.

Q. Is Glador safe for kidneys?

Glador does not affect kidneys in patients with normal kidney function. However, its use should be avoided in patients with severe kidney disease since Glador is principally eliminated by the kidneys.

Q. Does Glador cause memory loss?

No, it is not known that Glador causes memory loss. However, use of Glador may cause low blood sugar which may cause problems with concentration and reduced alertness.

Q. Who should not take Glador?

Glador should be avoided by patients who are allergic to it, have severe kidney or liver disease, have G6PD-deficiency (an inherited condition affecting red blood cells), or are due to have surgery. Along with that, patients who are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or breastfeeding, or have insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1 diabetes mellitus) should also avoid taking Glador.

Q. How long does it take for Glador to start working?

Glador takes about 2 to 3 hours to reduce blood sugar levels. You may not feel any difference, but this does not mean it is not working. So, continue the medication as directed by your doctor and if you have any concerns, discuss it with your doctor.

Q. How long do I need to take Glador? Can I stop the medication?

Treatment for diabetes is usually for life. You may have to continue the treatment life long. Do not stop taking Glador without talking to your doctor. If you stop taking Glador suddenly your diabetes may get worse.

Q. How and when to take Glador?

Glador tablets are available in 1mg, 2mg, 3mg and 4mg doses. The dose and frequency of the medicine will be decided by your doctor. Generally, a single daily dose of Glador is sufficient to control blood sugar levels. The dose should be taken whole with water shortly before or during breakfast, but if you skip breakfast then it should be taken shortly before or during your first main meal.

Q. What can happen if I take more than the recommended dose of Glador?

Overdose of Glador may significantly decrease your blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). If you have taken an excess dose then you should instantly consume enough sugar (e.g., a small bar of sugar cubes, sweet juice or sweetened tea) and inform a doctor immediately. Severe cases of hypoglycemia accompanied by loss of consciousness and coma are cases of medical emergency requiring immediate medical treatment and admission into hospital.
