Clomipramine is used in adults to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (mental condition characterized by unwanted thoughts and repetitive behavior). It is also used to treat muscular weakness (cataplexy) associated with repeat attacks of extreme sleepiness (narcolepsy).

How it works

Clomipramine belongs to the group of medicines called tricyclic antidepressants. It acts by restoring the balance of chemical substances (serotonin) present in the brain.

Common side effects

hot flush.Very rare: change in blood cell count, hypomania, disorientation, dizziness, hair loss, increase in liver enzymes, low blood pressure with change of position, increased blood pressure, activation of psychotic symptoms., muscular weakness, anaphylactic reactions including hypotension, reddish-purple discolouration of skin due to small, agitation, skin allergies, abnormal sensations of skin, unpleasant dreams, abnormal milky discharge from the breasts, memory impairment, sleepiness, problems with erection, unable to sleep, seeing or hearing things that are not really there, pneumonitis with or without eosinophilia, increased weight, loose motions, thumping, altered taste sensation, increased appetite, sensitivity to sunlight, itching of skin, aggravation of depression, decreased appetite, depersonalisation, involuntary muscle jerks, vomiting, abdominal disorders, breast enlargement, abnormally high fever, uncontrolled shaking, disturbance in attention, Most common: accommodation disorder, swelling, muscle hypertonia, abnormal increase in sweating .Common: increased heart rate, increased pressure inside the eye causing visual problems, abnormal ECG changes, sleep disorder, yawning, bleeding vessels near the skin surface .Uncommon: change from normal heartbeat, problem in passing urine, restlessness, ringing in ears, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, fatigue, mania, dilatation of the pupil of the eye, speech disorder, urinary retention, acute confusional state, pounding or fluttering sensation in chest, aggression, SIADH, blurred vision, heartbeat related disorder, hepatitis with or without jaundice, fits, anxiety, headache, unsteady movement, sexual activity disorder, abnormal electroencephalogram
