Brimonid Eye Drop

Overview

Introduction

Brimonid Eye Drop is used in the treatment of ocular hypertension (pressure in the eye) and glaucoma. It helps to lower high pressure in the eye and reduces the risk of vision loss. This medicine may be used alone or in combination with another eye drop that reduces pressure in the eye.

Brimonid Eye Drop is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the medication. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surface as it may contaminate the eye drop. For best results, use it daily in the evening or at night.

The common side effects include burning sensation, itching, or temporary blurring of the eyes. If they persist or worsen, inform your doctor.  If these side effects persist for a longer duration, please inform your doctor. Caution is advised for driving after administration of this injection if your eyes are not able to concentrate and react.

Uses of Brimonid Eye Drop

Side effects of Brimonid Eye Drop

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Brimonid

  • Erythema (skin redness)
  • Foreign body sensation in eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Dryness in mouth
  • Dermatitis
  • Burning sensation in eye
  • Ocular hyperemia
  • Stinging in the eyes
  • Flushing (sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck and trunk)
  • Eye itching
  • Allergic reaction in eye

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Blurred vision
You can consider washing your eyes with water. Avoid driving or using tools or machines if your vision is impaired. Do not take your next dose if your vision is still blurry. If it gets worse or does not improve, ask your doctor to recommend eye drops or talk about changing your medications.
  • Coping with Dryness in mouth
Keep a drink available that you can sip through the day. Rinse your mouth with warm salted water and chew sugarless gum or hard candy. Try breathing through your nose more often than your mouth. Avoid caffeinated beverages, smoking and alcohol because they can make your condition worse. Use lip balm if your lips are also dry. Try to avoid foods that are acidic (like lemons), spicy, salty or sugary. If this side effect bothers you or does not go away, talk to your doctor about artificial saliva products or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Flushing (sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck and trunk)
Sip cold or iced drinks. Try cutting down on coffee, tea and alcohol. It might help to keep the room cool and use a fan. You could also spray cool water on your face. Wear layers of light clothing that you can easily take off if you overheat. Breathe deeply and try to relax. Have a lukewarm shower or bath instead of a hot one. Avoid smoking and cut down on alcohol. The flushing should go away after a few days. If it does not go away or causes problems, contact your doctor. There may be medicines that can help.
  • Coping with Allergic reaction in eye
There are things you can do to ease your symptoms. Use clean cotton wool and boiled water (after it has cooled) to gently clean your eyes and eyelashes. Use a different piece of cotton wool for each eye. Wash your hands regularly. Apply a warm or cold compress to your closed eyelids several times daily. Warm compress helps to reduce the sticky discharge while cold compress relieves itching and inflammation. Do not rub or touch your eyes with your hands. These can worsen your symptoms. Do not wear contact lenses until you are better.
