Azitar Suspension is a broad-spectrum type of antibiotic effective in killing many types of gram-positive bacteria, some types of gram-negative bacteria and other microorganisms. This medicine is taken orally, preferably either one hour before or 2 hours after a meal. It should be used regularly at evenly spaced time intervals as prescribed by your doctor. How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Vomiting
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

  • Coping with Abdominal pain
In most cases, this is mild enough to be treated at home. Try to rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. Having a warm bath or shower can help you relax and relieve the pain. Drink plenty of clear fluids such as water and reduce your intake of coffee, tea, lemon juice or soda. Avoid alcohol and smoking as these can aggravate the pain. Eating slowly and having smaller and more frequent meals can also help. If the pain is severe, speak to your doctor. They may be able to guide you better.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.

Q. Can the use of Azitar cause diarrhea?

However, you must take Azitar exactly as advised by your doctor and ask your doctor if you have any doubts.

Q. How long does it take Azitar to work?

Azitar starts working within a few hours of taking it. You may notice improvement in symptoms after a few days. Do not stop taking the medicine without completing the course mentioned by your doctor. Stopping the medicine without consulting you doctor may cause the infection to come back which may be more difficult to treat.

Q. Why is Azitar given for 3 days?

The duration of treatment depends on the type of infection being treated and the age of the patient. Azitar is not necessarily given for 3 days. In most of the bacterial infections, a single dose of 500 mg is given for 3 days. Alternatively, it can be given as 500 mg once on day 1 and then 250 mg once from day 2 to day 5. In some cases of infection such as genital ulcer disease, it is given as a single 1 gram dose. Therefore, it is important that you stick to the regime advised by your doctor.

Q. What should I avoid while taking Azitar?

Generally, it is recommended that patients taking Azitar should avoid taking any antacid with this medicine as this can affect the overall effectiveness of Azitar. It is also recommended to avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning bed as Azitar increases the risk of sunburn.

Q. Is Azitar a strong antibiotic?

Azitar is an effective antibiotic which is used for the treatment of many bacterial infections. Compared to other antibiotics, Azitar has a longer half life which means that it stays in the body for a long time because of which it is given once a day and for short span of time. Other antibiotics comparatively have a shorter half life and are usually given twice, thrice or four times a day.

Q. Can you get a yeast infection from taking Azitar?

Some people may get a fungal or yeast infection known as thrush after taking Azitar. Antibiotics such as Azitar can kill the normal or ‘good bacteria’ of your intestine which are responsible to prevent thrush. You should inform your doctor if you get a sore or vaginal itching or discharge. Also inform your doctor if you get white mouth or tongue after taking Azitar or soon after stopping it.
