Prevanor 500mg Tablet

Overview

Introduction

Prevanor 500mg Tablet is a medicine used in the treatment of stroke, head injury, Alzheimer's disease and memory loss (dementia) in Parkinson's disease. It protects the nerve cells in the brain from damage and also helps to repair the damaged nerve cells. Therefore, it improves learning and memory.

Prevanor 500mg Tablet may be taken with or without food. However, it is advised to take it at the same time each day as this helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body. Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not stop taking it suddenly without talking to your doctor as it may worsen your symptoms.

Some common side effects that may be seen with this medicine include decreased blood pressure, stomach pain, diarrhea, and irregular heart rate. However, these are temporary and usually resolve on their own. Please consult your doctor if these do not subside or bother you.

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you ever had any problems with your kidneys or if you have or ever had any seizures (epilepsy or fits). Your dose depends on your age and the condition you are being treated for. Always let your doctor know about all the medicines that you are taking before you start with your treatment. Please inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding, before using this medicine.

Side effects of Prevanor Tablet

Common
  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats)
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Decreased blood pressure
Get up slowly from a sitting or lying position. Try to avoid changing positions suddenly even in general. Try crossing your legs when you are sitting and wearing compression stockings. Drink plenty of water and try eating smaller, more frequent meals. Although salt is not good for everyone (and bad for some people), if you have low blood pressure increasing your intake of salt (sodium) can raise your blood pressure. Cut down the amount of alcohol you drink. If your blood pressure becomes very low, you should talk to your doctor.
  • Coping with Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats)
Changes to your heart rhythm can be treated with a variety of medicines. You should ask your doctor whether you need medication or not. You can also try to prevent arrhythmias by limiting the amount of alcohol you drink and quitting smoking. Cut down the amount of coffee, tea or cola you drink. Lose weight if you need to. In general, keeping active, eating a healthy well-balanced diet, and having your blood pressure and cholesterol level under control is good for any heart condition. Your doctor will probably want you to get follow-up tests while taking this medicine and advise you accordingly.
  • Coping with Stomach pain
Try to get plenty of rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may relieve the stomach pain. It may help if you eat and drink slowly and have smaller and more frequent meals. Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and alcohol as these can make the pain worse. If you are in a lot of pain, speak to your doctor about possible medication. Your doctor may be able to prescribe some over-the-counter medicines to help reduce the pain.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.

Q. Can I take alcohol during treatment with Prevanor?

There are no studies to determine the effect of alcohol on treatment with Prevanor. However, since Prevanor is prescribed for stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, head injury, and age-related memory impairment, it is best to avoid the consumption of alcohol.

Q. Can students take Prevanor to improve memory and learning?
