Uses of Metsafe Tablet SR

Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is used in addition to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

How to use Metsafe Tablet SR

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR is to be taken with food.

How Metsafe Tablet SR works

Metformin is an anti-diabetic medication (biguanide). It works by lowering glucose production in the liver, delaying sugar (glucose) absorption from intestines and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin.

Alcohol
CAUTION
Taking metformin with alcohol can cause lactic acidosis and you may experience malaise, respiratory distress, slow or irregular heartbeat, sleepiness, stomach upset, or other unusual symptoms.
Pregnancy
PROBABLY SAFE
Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR is probably safe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effect on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
Driving
Your ability to drive may be affected if your blood sugar is low or high. If this happens, do not drive.
Kidney
CAUTION
Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR is, however, not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease. Regular monitoring of kidney function test is advisable while you are taking this medicine.
Liver
CAUTION
Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR is generally started with low dose in patients with mild to moderate liver disease and its use is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

What if you miss a dose of Metsafe Tablet SR?

If you miss a dose of Metsafe 500 mg Tablet SR, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

Q. Can the use of Metsafe cause vitamin B12 deficiency?

Yes, long-term use of Metsafe can cause vitamin B12 deficiency. long-term use interferes with the absorption of vitamin B12 in the stomach. If untreated, it may cause anemia and nerve problems and the patient can have tingling sensation and numbness in hands and feet, weakness, urinary problems, change in mental status and difficulty in making balance (ataxia). To avoid these problems, doctors usually suggest an intake of vitamin B12 from outside at least once every year.

Yes. Metsafe is used off-label in the treatment of PCOS. It may be used along with other medicines to induce ovulation and regularize menstrual cycles.

Metsafe may decrease the levels of vitamin B12 on long term use which may rarely cause a type of anemia in which blood cells are larger than normal (megaloblastic anemia). You may need to take foods rich in vitamin B12 like eggs, dairy products, and meat or a supplement from outside.

Q. How beneficial is it to take Metsafe with linagliptin?

Both Metsafe and linagliptin are anti-diabetic drugs and can be used together. Their fixed dose combinations are also available and commonly advised once Metsafe is unable to control blood sugar levels even after giving the maximum tolerated dose. As they work by different mechanisms, they help in better control of blood sugar levels compared to either drug taken alone.
