Flumet 150mg Tablet

Overview

Introduction

Flumet 150mg Tablet belongs to a group of medicines called antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of fungus and is used to treat infections of the mouth, throat, vagina and other parts of the body including fingernails and toenails. It kills fungi by destroying the fungal cell membrane.

Flumet 150mg Tablet should be taken in the dose and duration as prescribed by your doctor. It should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food. The dosage and length of treatment will depend on the condition you are being treated for. Sometimes this will be in cycles of use and non-use. To get the most benefit, take this medicine at evenly spaced times and continue using it until your prescription is finished, even if your symptoms disappear after a few days. If you stop treatment too early, the infection may return and if you miss doses you can increase your risk of infections that are resistant to further treatment. Tell your doctor if the infection does not get better or if it gets worse. Avoid taking antacid treatments within one hour before or two hours after you take it.

The most common side effects of this medicine include stomach pain, headache and feeling sick (nausea). You could ask your doctor about ways of preventing or reducing these effects. You should stop taking it straight away if you have any signs of an allergic reaction or of congestive heart failure. Signs of this include rash, swelling of the lips, throat or face, swallowing or breathing problems, feeling dizzy or faint and nausea.

Do not take it if you are pregnant or could become pregnant unless your doctor has told you to. Talk to your doctor before taking it if you have ever had heart failure, a weak immune system (including HIV/AIDS), kidney problems or liver problems such as yellow skin (jaundice). This medicine may not be suitable for you. If your course of treatment is for more than a month, your doctor may want to check your liver by testing your blood. This medicine may make you dizzy or have blurred vision so do not drive or operate machines until it is safe.

Q. Is Flumet an antibiotic or a steroid? What is it used for?

Flumet is neither an antibiotic nor a steroid. It is an antifungal medicine and is used to treat fungal infections including yeast infections of vagina, mouth, throat, esophagus (food pipe), abdomen, lungs, blood and other organs and cryptococcal meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain and spine). It is also used to prevent candidal infections in patients who are likely to become infected because they are being treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy before a bone marrow transplant.

Q. I have been prescribed Flumet for esophageal candidiasis. How long should I continue to take it?

The length of the treatment should be as per the doctor’s advice. In general, for esophageal candidiasis, you should take the treatment for a minimum of 3 weeks and continue to take it for 2 weeks after the symptoms have resolved.

Q. Does Flumet cause liver damage?

If you already have liver problem or a serious medical problem, you need to be very careful while taking Flumet since serious liver damage may occur. Call your doctor if your skin or eyes become yellow, your urine turns darker, your stools become light-colored, have severe skin itching or if you vomit or feel like vomiting.

Q. Can I stop taking Flumet if my symptoms resolve and I start feeling better?

No, do not stop taking the medicines even if you start feeling better. Continue taking Flumet as long as your doctor has advised you to take it. If you do not complete the treatment, your infection may come back.

Q. Does Flumet have any effect on birth control pills?

Q. What if I forget to take Flumet?

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when as scheduled. Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking it as per the schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose. This may increase the chance of you getting an unwanted side effect. In case of any confusion contact, ask your doctor.

Q. What is drug resistance? Is it possible to develop resistance to Flumet?

Sometimes it happens that the fungi gets modified in your body and the medicine no longer works. This is called drug resistance. Resistance to Flumet has been reported in some candida species (Candida krusei), for which it should not be used. Take the complete course of Flumet to avoid drug resistance.

Q. Is it okay to take rifabutin along with Flumet?

Flumet may interfere with the working of rifabutin. Therefore, you have to be careful while taking both together as side effects of rifabutin, like uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye), are more likely to occur when both are taken together.

Q. What if I accidentally take more than the recommended dose of Flumet?

Taking more than the recommended dose may cause hallucinations and paranoid behavior. Seek medical support in a nearby hospital or call your doctor.

Q. Is it safe to take warfarin and Flumet together?

Flumet may increase the amount of warfarin in the body. This may result in toxicity of warfarin. Get blood investigations done for bleeding time (blood test done to see how long it takes for the clot to form). Depending on the results of this blood test, you may need to get the dose of warfarin modified.
