Overview

Introduction of Exelon Transdermal Patch

Exelon Patch 10 is used to treat mild to moderate dementia in Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive illness which gradually affects memory and thinking. It is also used to treat Parkinson’s disease. It does not cure these illnesses but may help improve memory, awareness and other symptoms.

Your doctor will explain how to use Exelon Patch 10 and give you the one most suitable for you. Follow the instructions carefully to get the most benefit. The dose may change from time to time to suit your individual needs. You should not wear more than one patch at a time. Normally you will use one new patch each day, changing the place where you apply it to avoid skin irritation. It can take up to 4 weeks for symptoms to improve so keep wearing your patches regularly.

The most common side effects of this medicine include dizziness, feeling restless and anxious. You may have side effects more often when you start your treatment or when your dose is increased. Usually, the side effects will slowly go away as your body gets used to the Exelon Patch 10. If they are severe or will not go away, you should remove your patch and contact your doctor.

Before using Exelon Patch 10, you should tell your doctor if you’ve ever had heart problems, stomach ulcer, epilepsy or asthma. It may also affect, or be affected by, some other drugs you are using so let your doctor know what these are to be safe. During pregnancy this medicine should only be used if it is clearly needed.

How Exelon Transdermal Patch works

Memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease occurs due to disturbances of signal transmission in the brain. Exelon Patch 10 is a cholinesterase inhibitor which is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Once absorbed, it works by increasing the levels of a chemical messenger (acetylcholine) involved in transmmission of nerve signals. This improves memory and thinking.

Parkinsonism is Disorder of motor activity characterised by slowness of movement and stiffness. Memory loss is a consequence of dementia. Both can occur together. Dementia involves damage of nerve cells in the brain, which can occur in several areas of the brain. Dementia affects people differently, depending on the area of the brain affected. Most types of dementia can't be cured, but there are ways to manage the behavioural symptoms. A neurological and psychiatric evaluation is required to make a rehabilitation plan for such patients.
