Introduction of Chlohat Tablet

Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet is a type of diuretic (water pill). This medicine reduces excess fluid levels in the body and is used to treat edema (fluid overload) associated with heart, liver, kidney, or lung disease. It is also used in treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. It makes you lose excess water through urine. This medicine should be taken only during day time to avoid frequent urination at night. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines. Regular monitoring of kidney function and electrolytes is important while using this medicine. Dizziness and headache may occur as side effects initially, but these improve with time.

How to use Chlohat Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet is to be taken with food.

How Chlohat Tablet works

Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet is a diuretic which lowers blood pressure by removing extra water and certain electrolytes from the body. Over time it also relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow.

Alcohol
CAUTION
It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet. Taking Chlorthalidone with alcohol may have additive effects in lowering your blood pressure. You may experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart rate.
Pregnancy
WEIGH RISKS VS BENEFITS
Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
SAFE
Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet is safe to use during lactation. Human studies have shown that either the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in significant amount or is not expected to cause toxicity to the baby.
Driving
Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet may make you feel dizzy, sleepy, tired, or decrease alertness. If this happens, do not drive.
Kidney
Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet is not recommended in these patients.
Liver
CAUTION
Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

What if you miss a dose of Chlohat Tablet?

If you miss a dose of Chlohat 12.5 mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Q. Can I drink alcohol while taking Chlohat?

No, do not take alcohol while on treatment with Chlohat. Taking alcohol with Chlohat may lower your blood pressure suddenly making you feel dizzy and lightheaded.

Q. What happens if I take more than the recommended dose of Chlohat?

If you take more than the prescribed dose of Chlohat, you may experience nausea, lightheadedness, weakness, fast or irregular heart beat, sleepiness, muscle cramps and pain, difficulty in breathing. Taking this medicine in high doses may even cause a heart attack. In a situation like this, contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency help in a nearby hospital.

Q. Can I take ibuprofen with Chlohat?

This combination is best avoided since the two medicines may interfere with each other. However, if your doctor advises you to take both ibuprofen and Chlohat, you will need to keep a regular check on your blood pressure and also monitor your kidney function tests.

Q. Does Chlohat increase uric acid? Can it cause gout?

Yes, Chlohat may raise uric acid levels. However, the occurrence of gout due to Chlohat is very rare.

Q. Does Chlohat cause skin cancer?

No, there have been no reports of Chlohat causing skin cancer. However, in rare cases, this medicine can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight than usual. If you are exposed to direct sunlight you may get skin rash, so wear protective clothing and use sunscreen.
