How to use Acitrin Capsule

How Acitrin Capsule works

Acitrin 10 mg Capsule is a retinoid. It has a structure similar to vitamin A and is involved in the normal growth of skin cells. It works by stopping overgrowth and thickening of skin cells in psoriasis.

Acitrin Capsule related warnings

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Acitrin 10 mg Capsule. Taking alcohol and acitretin is not recommended because it increase the risk for birth defects in pregnant women.
Acitrin 10 mg Capsule is highly unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Human and animal studies have shown significant adverse effects on the foetus. Please consult your doctor.
Acitrin 10 mg Capsule is probably unsafe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggest that the drug could represent a significant risk to the baby.
Acitrin 10 mg Capsule may make you feel dizzy, sleepy, tired, or decrease alertness. If this happens, do not drive.
Acitrin 10 mg Capsule should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Acitrin 10 mg Capsule may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

  • Take it at the same time every day with food or a glass of milk.
  • Do not take Acitrin 10 mg Capsule if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding as it can cause birth defects in babies. Use effective methods of contraception to prevent pregnancy.
  • You will need to take pregnancy tests regularly if you are on treatment with and for at least 3 years after you stop taking this medicine.
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight while using Acitrin 10 mg Capsule as it increases the sensitivity of your skin. Use protective measures such as sun-creams and protective clothing.
  • It may cause dryness of skin, mouth, and lips. Drink plenty of water and use a moisturiser and lip balm, if needed.
  • It may cause dry eyes and blurring of vision. Avoid wearing contact lenses and be cautious before driving or using machines.
  • Your doctor may get your regular blood tests done to monitor your liver function and the levels of fats such as cholesterol in your blood.

Q. For how long am I supposed to use Acitrin?

Your doctor will decide the duration of your treatment depending on the severity of your disease. Usually, the treatment with Acitrin lasts for 4-5 months.

Q. I am a woman, and I have been prescribed Acitrin, what should I do if I am planning to become pregnant?

Talk to your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant while taking Acitrin. You should never get pregnant while taking Acitrin and for 3 years after stopping it completely. This medicine can harm your baby. Stop taking Acitrin and call your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking Acitrin, or if you become pregnant within 3 years of stopping this medicine.

Q. Why does Acitrin cause dry skin, dry lips and dry nose, and how to manage them?

One of the most common side effects of Acitrin is dryness of skin, nose, and lips. This happens because Acitrin reduces the secretion of oil from oil glands. Dryness due to Acitrin can be managed by applying a moisturizer or a lubricant like Vaseline. You can also apply lip balm to get relief from cracked and dry lips.

Q. What will happen if I drink alcohol while taking Acitrin?

Do not drink alcohol while taking Acitrin or within 2 months of stopping this medicine. It is very important to avoid alcohol because alcohol can change the chemical composition of Acitrin. This changed form of Acitrin may take 3 years to get removed from the body.
