Retrgrade Urethrogram (RGU)

A Retrograde Urethrogram (RGU) X-ray is a diagnostic test that is used to look at the urethra for detecting any structural abnormalities, which cannot be seen on a normal X-ray. The urethra is a narrow muscular tube that drains urine from the bladder. This test is usually suggested to men to determine the cause of urethral narrowing which is caused due to enlargement of the prostate.

This test is ordered to detect the cause of poor urine flow due to enlargement of the prostate, urethral obstruction, and tumors in the urethra. The symptoms of the narrow urethra are bloody or dark urine, loss of control over the bladder, painful urination, and pain in the abdomen.

The benefit of the RGU is that it helps to detect problems in the urethra and plan the best treatment, based on the location and the extent of narrowing. The procedure takes only five minutes.
