Micturating Cysto-Urethrogram (MCU)

Micturating Cysto-Urethrogram (MCU) is a special X-ray procedure to look at the bladder as it fills and empties. A contrast material is injected into the blood which helps in increasing the visibility of internal organs. It is used to scan the urinary bladders during the entire process and create images of the bladder and urethra during filling up and emptying to assess its functioning and any disorders associated with it.
This test is prescribed by the doctor to assess urinary bladder and functioning, to find out urinary reflux in which urine flows from the bladder back into the kidneys through the ureters, to diagnose conditions affecting the lower urinary tract, and to check any obstruction in the urethra.
This test is most commonly performed on children under six months of age, but can also be used for older children and adults with multiple recurrent urinary tract infections.
