HSV 2 IgG & IgM
Understanding HSV 2 IgG & IgM
What is HSV 2 IgG & IgM?
HSV 2 IgG & IgM test detects the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus-2 (HSV-2) which causes genital herpes. HSV-2 presents as sores in the genital area, and is transmissible through sexual contact. Symptoms may include pain, itching and blisters around genital areas, painful ulcers that ooze or bleed, scabs that form as the ulcers heal, painful urination, etc. This test may also be used to detect a recent or past herpes infection. The test is recommended in pregnancy to prevent neonatal herpes. However, regular screening, using condoms during sexual contact, and avoiding sexual contact with an infected person are some of the ways to prevent the infection.
What is HSV 2 IgG & IgM used for?
HSV 2 IgG and IgM tests are performed to diagnose an infection of the Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV 2). If herpes symptoms like blisters in genital area and viral meningitis symptoms are detected, the test may be recommended.
What does HSV 2 IgG & IgM measure?
Contains 2 testsHerpes Simplex Virus 2 IgG
A Herpes Simplex Virus 2 IgG test looks for the presence of IgG antibodies against HSV-2 in response to the Herpes infection. IgG antibodies are the most frequent type of antibody, which are developed around 18 to 21 days after the virus invades the body and remains in the body for life. Thus, the presence of IgG antibodies typically means an individual has been infected with the HSV-2 at some point. Detection of HSV-2 infection allows doctors to provide necessary support and guidance to individuals suffering from genital herpes, leading to better treatment outcomes and improved quality of life.

Herpes Simplex Virus 2 IgM
The Herpes Simplex Virus 2 IgM test detects the presence of IgM antibodies that are produced against an infection caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). IgM antibodies specific for HSV-2 are present only for a relatively short period of time. They are the first antibodies to form after the infection and are excellent markers for the presence of a recently acquired or active disease. Also, these antibodies are usually present in higher concentrations shortly after infection and eventually decrease after some time (7-10 days).

Interpreting HSV 2 IgG & IgM results
Interpretations
- A positive HSV-2 IgM test indicates recent or active infection.
• A positive HSV-2 IgG test indicates previous infection.
• A significant increase in HSV 2 IgG antibodies also indicates an active or recent infection.
• Negative results indicate that no exposure to HSV occurred, or that antibodies were not yet produced.
