Hepatitis B is a viral infection that causes liver inflammation, primarily due to the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The virus is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood, semen, or vaginal secretions, often through unprotected sex, sharing needles, or from mother to child at birth. Some individuals may show no symptoms, while others may experience symptoms like fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, and dark urine. The infection may be acute, occurring suddenly and lasting a few weeks to months, or chronic, persisting for six months or longer.

This test helps evaluate individuals showing liver disease symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, or abdominal discomfort. It is also used post-exposure (blood transfusions, needle sharing, unprotected sex, close contact with infected persons) and for pregnant women to assess vertical transmission ( the passing of infection from mother to baby during childbirth) risk. Early detection of HBV infection through this test allows timely medical intervention and monitoring. It also helps in taking preventive measures, such as vaccination, for people who are at risk of infection.

Usually, no special preparation is required for this test. Eat and drink as per the daily routine. However, sharing the clinical history, current medications, and supplement use with the doctor before giving the sample is preferred, as these may influence the results.
