Androstenedione

Androstenedione (A4) is a steroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands and gonads (testes in males, ovaries in females). Androstenedione is a primary precursor to testosterone and estrogen, which influence metabolism, sexual development, and reproductive function.

In males, androstenedione is primarily converted into testosterone. Testosterone is vital for sperm production, muscle growth, and the development of male physical characteristics. In females, it is converted into estrogen, a hormone essential for reproductive health and the regulation of the menstrual cycle.

An imbalance in androstenedione levels can signal underlying issues with the adrenal glands or reproductive organs. The Androstenedione test helps detect such imbalances, guiding further diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders.

Doctors may recommend the Androstenedione test when there are noticeable symptoms of hormonal imbalance. In females, symptoms include menstrual irregularities (amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea), hirsutism, acne, infertility, or virilization (e.g., voice deepening, male pattern baldness, etc.). In males/children, testing may be indicated for precocious puberty, delayed puberty, or ambiguous genitalia (in infants).
