Verna 8mg Tablet MD

Overview

Introduction

Verna 8mg Tablet MD is used to prevent and treat a disorder of the inner ear known as Ménière’s disease. The symptoms include dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and loss of hearing, probably caused by fluid in the ear. This medicine helps relieve the symptoms by reducing the amount of fluid.

Verna 8mg Tablet MD should be swallowed whole with water and taken at the same time(s) each day to get the most benefit. Your doctor will decide what is the correct dose to relieve your symptoms and how often you need to take it. You may need to take this medicine for several months and you should take it for as long as you prescribed by your doctor, even if you start feeling better.

The most common side effects include headache, feeling sick, and indigestion (dyspepsia). You may also get stomach pain and bloating. Taking the medicine with food can help reduce stomach problems.

Before taking this medicine, you should talk to your doctor if you have a stomach ulcer, asthma, or high or low blood pressure. You must also tell him/her what other medicines you are taking, to make sure you are safe. Also speak to your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding.

Uses of Verna Tablet MD

  • Meniere's disease

Benefits of Verna Tablet MD

In Meniere's disease

Verna 8mg Tablet MD belongs to a group of medicine called histamine analogues. It works by improving blood flow to the inner ear which reduces the pressure of excess fluid there. It is this pressure which is thought to cause the symptoms of nausea, vertigo (dizziness), tinnitus (ringing in your ears) and hearing loss in people who have Ménière’s disease. Verna 8mg Tablet MD makes the symptoms milder and reduces the number of times you get the symptoms. It will be more effective if you take this medicine regularly as prescribed so try not to miss doses. It may take a couple of weeks before you notice any improvements but keep taking it, even if you do feel better, until your doctor advises it is safe to stop.

Side effects of Verna Tablet MD

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Verna

  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Bloating

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Indigestion
Try taking your medicine with a meal or snack, or shortly after eating. It might help to eat smaller and more frequent meals, and to eat and drink slowly. Avoid foods which can irritate your stomach such as carbonated soft drinks, caffeine, fatty and spicy foods, mints and citrus fruits. Quit smoking and alcohol because they increase the symptoms. Do not eat for 3 or 4 hours before going to bed. Try raising the head of your bed at night or use extra pillows. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medicines that may help, such as antacids, if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Stomach pain
Try to get plenty of rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may relieve the stomach pain. It may help if you eat and drink slowly and have smaller and more frequent meals. Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and alcohol as these can make the pain worse. If you are in a lot of pain, speak to your doctor about possible medication. Your doctor may be able to prescribe some over-the-counter medicines to help reduce the pain.
  • Coping with Bloating
Try eating small and frequent meals. Drink and chew your food slowly. Exercise regularly to improve how your body digests food. Try not to swallow too much air. This can happen when you talk and eat at the same time. Avoid drinking with a straw, chewing gum and smoking as these can also make you swallow air. Try to limit foods that are hard to digest or produce gas (such as fried and fatty foods, cheese, beans, cabbage, onion, whole grains and many others). Avoid drinking alcohol, carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices. If you wear dentures, make sure they fit properly. Some over-the-counter medicines can help. Talk to your doctor about possible medication if your condition does not improve.

How to use Verna Tablet MD

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not handle the tablets with wet hands. Put it in your mouth but do not swallow it. Verna 8mg Tablet MD may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Verna Tablet MD works

Verna 8mg Tablet MD is a histamine analog. It works by improving the blood flow in the inner ear which reduces the pressure of excess fluid there. Excess fluid can send signals to the brain causing nausea, dizziness or spinning sensations (symptoms of Ménière's disease). Verna 8mg Tablet MD additionally dampens down the nerve signals sent from the inner ear to the brain relieving the symptoms of Ménière's disease.

FAQs

Q. What is Meniere's disease? Does it go away?

Meniere's disease is a disorder of the balance and hearing organs in the inner ear. The symptoms include vertigo, fluctuations in hearing, tinnitus (ringing of the ears) and pressure in the ears. Along with that, one may experience dizziness which in turn may cause nausea and vomiting. The treatment for Meniere's disease depends on various factors. Hence, an open discussion with the doctor can help to determine the best treatment strategy in your personal case.

Q. Is Verna effective?

Verna is effective if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Do not stop taking it even if you see improvement in your condition. If you stop using Verna too early, the symptoms may return or worsen.

Q. What are the triggers for Meniere's disease?

Meniere's disease can be triggered by conditions like stress, overwork, fatigue, emotional distress, additional illnesses and pressure changes. Along with that, certain foods such as dairy products, caffeine, alcohol and foods with high sodium content may trigger Meniere's disease. A 2-gram/day low-salt diet can help control vertigo in Meniere's disease.

Q. What if I forget to take a dose of Verna?

If you forget a dose of Verna, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose on the scheduled time. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one as this may increase the chances of developing side effects.

Q. Is stress a reason for vertigo?

Mental stress can trigger vertigo. It can make many forms of vertigo worse, but will not, by itself, produce vertigo.

Q. What are the causes of vertigo?

Vertigo may be caused either by a sudden drop in blood pressure or because of being dehydrated. Many people feel lightheaded if they get up too quickly from sitting or lying down. Along with that, motion sickness, certain medicines and problems with your inner ear (Meniere's disease, acoustic neuroma) may cause vertigo. It is important to know that sometimes vertigo can be a symptom of other disorders (multiple sclerosis, following head trauma) as well.

Q. How long should Verna be taken?

Duration of treatment with Verna may vary from patient to patient. Some people respond rapidly to treatment while others may take some time. Hence, it is advised to take your tablets regularly and wait for the results patiently. Consult the doctor if not sure.

Q. What are the common side effects of Verna?

Verna can cause mild stomach problems such as vomiting, stomach pain, stomach swelling (abdominal distension) and bloating. You can reduce the chances of getting these side effects by taking Verna with food. However, the absorption of Verna may get reduced when taken with food.
