Product introduction

Before you start taking Thyronex 50 Tablet, your doctor will do a blood test to see what dose you need. Once you start taking the medicine, you will have regular blood tests to see how well it is working, and the dose may be adjusted from time to time. It is best taken on an empty stomach before your first meal of the day. You should take this medicine regularly to get the maximum benefit. It may take several weeks before your symptoms start to improve. You may need to take it for the rest of your life. If you stop taking it, your symptoms are likely to come back.

The most common side effects of this medicine are caused by taking a higher dose than you need. Possible side effects include palpitations (irregular heartbeat), vomiting, anxiety, diarrhea, weight loss, tremors, increased appetite, and restlessness. Most side effects will disappear once you are on the right dose. Call your doctor straight away if you have a very high temperature, fast or irregular heart rate, low blood pressure, yellowness in the eye/skin, confusion, or fits.

Thyronex 50 Tablet may cause weight loss but should not be prescribed or taken to treat obesity. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, inform your doctor right away as the dose may have to be increased/readjusted. Many other drugs affect the way this medicine works. Ask your doctor for advice if you are taking any other medications.

How Thyronex Tablet works

Thyronex 50 Tablet is a synthetic version of a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It works by replacing the thyroid hormones that your thyroid gland cannot produce in a sufficient quantity, and relieves the symptoms of hypothyroidism (tiredness, weight gain, and depression).

Quick tips

  • Thyronex 50 Tablet should be taken on an empty stomach (ideally, first thing in the morning). No food, milk, or tea should be taken 1 hour before and 2 hours after taking this medicine.
  • It may take 6 to 8 weeks to get the full effect.
  • For most people, Thyronex 50 Tablet can be a lifelong medication. Do not discontinue it without discussing your doctor.
  • Inform your doctor if you have diarrhea, nervousness, irritability, sleep disturbances, shaking hands, or chest pain. Your doctor may adjust your dose.
  • Leave a gap of at least 4 hours before taking any antacids, calcium or iron supplements, and multivitamins, as these may interfere with the effect of the medicine.
  • Get your hormone levels checked regularly and inform your doctor if you notice a significant change in your body weight. The dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Inform your doctor before changing the brand of Thyronex 50 Tablet as all brands may not have the same effect.

Interaction with drugs

Taking Thyronex with any of the following medicines can modify the effect of either of them and cause some undesirable side effects

Allylestrenol (Oral Route)

If concurrent use is essential, your doctor may monitor your thyroid functioning closely along with your overall treatment and adjust the doses as per the observations.

Amiodarone (Oral Route)

Do not consume Thyroxine with Amiodarone. If concurrent use is essential, your doctor may monitor your thyroid functioning closely along with your overall treatment and adjust the doses as per the observations. Amiodarone may reduce blood levels of Thyroxine and its active form.

Amiodarone (Injection Route)

Do not consume Thyroxine with Amiodarone. If concurrent use is essential, your doctor may monitor your thyroid functioning closely along with your overall treatment and adjust the doses as per the observations. Amiodarone may reduce blood levels of Thyroxine and its active form.

Atazanavir (Oral Route)

If concurrent use is essential, please consult your doctor, they may monitor your thyroid function closely along with your overall treatment and adjust the doses as per the observations. Atazanavir may reduce the efficacy of Thyroxine.

Ensure a gap of at least 4 hours between taking Thyroxine and Calcium. Thyroxine may increase the effect of Calcium.

Frequently asked questions

An overdose of this medicine may cause nervousness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, hand tremors, excessive sweating, weight loss, and sleep problems. You should immediately consult your doctor in case of an overdose.
You should take Thyronex 50 Tablet as long as your doctor has recommended. Usually, it is prescribed for the long term and you may have to take it lifelong. Do not stop taking the medicine, as your symptoms of low levels of thyroid hormone may reoccur.
Take Thyronex 50 Tablet exactly as advised by your doctor. Thyronex 50 Tablet should be taken orally preferably before breakfast or as a first meal of the day. It should be swallowed whole with plenty of water.
Thyronex 50 Tablet may raise blood sugar levels and may affect the working of other anti-diabetic medicines which you might be taking. Hence, dose adjustment may be required. Consult your doctor who will help you with dose management.
Oral birth control pills, which contain both estrogen and progesterone may reduce the amount of Thyronex 50 Tablet in your body and therefore the dose of Thyronex 50 Tablet may have to be increased.
The side effects of Thyronex 50 Tablet are mostly seen when it is taken at high doses. These symptoms include allergic reaction, headache, vomiting, flushing, high temperature, sweating, weight loss, tremor, restlessness, and excitability. It may also cause difficulty in sleeping (insomnia), increased pressure around the brain in children (benign intracranial hypertension), chest pain (angina), pounding, irregular or fast heartbeat, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and muscle weakness. The other side effects related to Thyronex 50 Tablet include deformity of the skull in infants caused by the early closure of joints in the skull bone (craniostenosis), growth in children may slow or stop due to changes in bone growth, irregular periods, intolerance to heat, and temporary hair loss in children.
