Sodium Picosulfate(NA)


Picozan tablet is used to provide relief from constipation (difficulty in passing stools). It also used (in combination with magnesium oxide and anhydrous citric acid) to empty the bowel before colonoscopy (internal examination of colon to check for cancers or other abnormalities).

How it works

Picozan tablet belongs to a class of drugs called laxatives. It works by gently stimulating the bowel muscles to increase peristalsis (wave like muscle contractions that moves food along the digestive tract) and propel the contents of bowel out of the body. It provides overnight relief from constipation and helps body return to its natural cycle.

  • Do not take sodium picosulfate continuously on a daily basis for more than 5 days. The underlying cause of constipation should be investigated in such cases.
  • Avoid excessive use of sodium picosulfate. It may lead to fluid and mineral (electrolyte) imbalance or low potassium in blood (hypokalemia).
  • Doctor’s advice should be considered in case of patients with following history of disease conditions: ulcers or inflammation of bowel (Colonic Mucosal Ulceration, Ischemic Colitis and Ulcerative Colitis); heart or kidney problems; fits; imbalance of minerals in blood (electrolyte imbalance); troubles swallowing and are prone to choking (impaired gag reflex).
  • Avoid sodium picosulfate if you are having withdrawal symptoms to alcohol or benzodiazepine drugs.
  • You may feel dizzy or faint while taking sodium picosulfate. Do not drive or operate machinery till you feel better.
  • Please inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking to avoid interactions that may reduce effectiveness of any treatment or aggravate side effects.
  • Use of sodium picosulfate is not recommended in children aged below 10 years, unless under the strict supervision of a doctor.
  • Do consult your doctor before taking sodium picosulfate if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
