Overview

Introduction

Nicomem Injection is a medicine used to control bleeding from the uterus, that may occur after childbirth or an abortion. It works on the smooth muscle of the uterus and increases tone, rate, and amplitude of contractions thus reduces blood loss.

Nicomem Injection is not for a self-administered, it is given as an injection into the veins or muscles by the doctor at hospital setting. It should be taken as your doctor's advice. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms.

The most common side effects of this medicine include headache, increase in blood pressure and seizure.  If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. Generally, alcohol should be avoided while taking this medicine.

Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have ever had heart disease or you have high blood pressure. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with High blood pressure
You can reduce your blood pressure by eating less salt, eating more fruit and vegetables, reducing the amount of alcohol you drink, being more active and losing weight. You could also reduce your caffeine intake (found in tea, coffee and cola drinks). Also, if you smoke, seek advice about quitting. High blood pressure can be treated with a range of different medicines. You should ask your doctor whether you need medication. Keep in touch with your doctor and get your blood pressure checked regularly.
  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Seizure
Having a fit or seizure can be dangerous. It often needs urgent medical help. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly. Ask your doctor about gradually reducing the dose of your medicine or stopping the treatment. You can help yourself avoid having a seizure by taking your medicine in the right doses at the right time(s). Make sure you get enough sleep, as lack of sleep can trigger a seizure. Keep active and manage your stress levels.

How to use Nicomem Injection

Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. Kindly do not self administer.

How Nicomem Injection works

Nicomem Injection is an ergot alkaloid. It works by causing sustained contractions of the smooth muscles of the uterus. This results in compression of the blood vessels which controls bleeding after delivery.
