Patient Concerns

Questions Related to Fempro

This query is for my mother. She was diagnosed with breast cancer stage 1 a couple of years back. It was thus treated with surgery followed by radiology. The doctor has since put her on anastrozole 1mg tablet daily for 5 years. She has been taking altraz 1mg by alkem laboratories since inception but now we have found a same salt medicine named elinal 1mg by emcure pharmaceuticals with same composition. Is elinal an equally effective medicine and can be taken in lieu of altraz? Reason for switching: elinal costs 80% less than altraz.

Hi PATIENT understand your concern. Emcee is a very good brand too. There is technically no difference in the two medicines. However I would suggest you verify with your treating doctor in this case because in case later something goes wrong in future, your doctor will only blame you that you checnged the medicine without consulting him and that is reason the patient has deteriorated. Cancer is known to be notorious. I have myself lost 2 very close family members to breast cancer. Do not take me wrong. I'm only asking you to verify with your doctor so that in future you face no problems in this account.
I had a 1-2 Stage breast cancer and mastectomy was done for left breast in 2011. Earlier I was taking Tamoxifen Citrate 20mg. Now, prescribed Altraz 1mg. Which is better and can I continue with Tamoxifen as Altraz is too costly.

FAQs

Q. Why have I been prescribed Fempro?

Fempro is an aromatase inhibitor. It is generally prescribed to treat breast cancer in women who no longer have periods, either due to menopause or after surgery or chemotherapy. It is also used to treat infertility caused due to anovulation (during menstrual cycle egg cell from ovaries is not released).

Q. How does Fempro work?

Fempro is also known as an anti-estrogen drug. It is called so because it acts by reducing the production of estrogen in your body by blocking the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for production of estrogen. Estrogen stimulates the production of certain types of breast cancer in your body. These cancers are called "estrogen-dependent cancers". Reducing the production of estrogen may prevent the cancer from growing.

Q. For how long should I take Fempro?

If the breast tumor is in advanced stage or has spread to other parts of the body, it is recommended that you continue taking Fempro till the tumor shows progression. In cases where Fempro is given after tamoxifen (another anti-estrogen used for breast cancer) or surgery, it should be given for 5 years or until tumor comes back, whichever is first. It can also be given as a sequential treatment; 2 years of Fempro followed by 3 years of tamoxifen.

Q. If I am taking irbesartan to control my blood pressure, can I take Fempro?

Yes, you can take irbesartan and Fempro together. However, be careful and keep a regular check on your blood pressure since Fempro may increase your blood pressure. Consult your doctor in case you have problems controlling your blood pressure.

Q. Does Fempro affect vision?

Although it is very uncommon but Fempro may cause cataract. So, if you experience blurred vision or eye irritation, consult your doctor immediately.

Q. My friend who is taking Fempro often sweats a lot. Is it because of Fempro?

This could be a sign of hot flushes which is a very common side effect of Fempro. It happens due to decreased estrogen levels. The frequency of hot flushes reduces once your body adjusts to Fempro. However, in some people the flushes and sweats may continue during the treatment and stop a few months after the treatment finishes. You can consult your doctor who will provide you a remedy if it is very bothersome.

Q. What are the serious side effects of Fempro?

The serious side effects do not occur in everyone and very few people experience them. The serious side effects of Fempro include stroke, angina, heart attack, blood clotting, cataract, osteoporosis and severe skin reactions.
