Overview

Introduction

Elyn Cream is a medicine used for treatment of excessive facial hair growth (facial hirsutism). It slows down the growth of unwanted hair around the lips or under the chin.

Elyn Cream is for external use only. Apply the cream on freshly cleaned and dried skin or as directed by the doctor. You must wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this medicine. This medicine should be used regularly to get the most benefit from it. Do not use more than you need as it will not clear your condition faster and some side effects may be increased.

Common side effects include acne, itching, skin redness, hair loss, burning discomfort, stinging sensation, dry skin, rash, irritation, and hair follicle inflammation. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Contact your doctor straight away if you are at all concerned about any of these side effects. Avoid direct contact of the cream or ointment with your eyes. In case of direct contact, wash your eyes with water and seek immediate medical attention. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting your physician as the hair growth may resume after stopping the treatment.

Before taking this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. You should tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver diseases so that your doctor can prescribe a suitable dose for you.

  • Rash
  • Paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation)
  • Irritation
  • Hair follicle inflammation

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Acne
Do not wash affected areas more than twice a day. Use a mild soap or cleanser and do not scrub the affected area. Avoid using too much make-up and excessive sun exposure. Try to eat a healthy balanced diet and avoid oily or spicy food. Do not try to squeeze spots and refrain from touching or picking the affected areas as it can trigger more acne, leading to infection or scarring. Regularly wash pillowcases, sheets and clothes that come in contact with acne. Talk to your doctor if your acne has not improved. They will assess your acne and suggest next steps for treatment.
  • Coping with Hair loss
Use gentle hair products such as baby shampoo. Use a soft brush and comb gently. Avoid using hairdryers, curling tongs or hair straighteners and pat your hair dry after washing. Do not color your hair. Protect your scalp by covering your head in the sun. It is necessary to not take the stress and eat a balanced, nutritious diet as it is vital for the health of your hair.
  • Coping with Dry skin
Use mild cleansing creams or soaps rather than harsh or perfumed ones. Use warm water (not hot) and do not spend too long in the bath or shower. Long bathing hours or using harsh soaps can wash away natural oils. Dry your skin gently with a towel and apply moisturizer immediately after washing. Do not use alcohol-based products on your skin. Choose clothing fabrics that will not irritate your skin.
  • Coping with Rash
There are many treatments for a wide range of skin problems. Avoid hot showers or baths because hot water can irritate the skin. Make sure to pat dry your skin after a bath or shower. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Leave the skin exposed to the air as much as possible. Do not use perfumed soaps or deodorants. Water containing chlorine can make most skin problems worse, so avoid swimming. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke and caffeine as it may also make itching worse. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Always use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Moisturizers can be used regularly to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better within a week, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
  • Coping with Paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation)
Massaging the numb area can help improve blood flow and provide relief. Try warming your hands and feet if they are cold. In case they are hot, try cooling them down. Get plenty of rest as lack of proper sleep may worsen the condition. Reducing stress, avoiding alcohol, exercising regularly, and getting enough vitamins and nutrients through your diet can also make you feel better.
  • Coping with Irritation
If you feel this medicine is causing mood or behavior changes, speak to your doctor as you may need a change of medicine. There are also some things you can do yourself. Eat well, do relaxation or deep breathing exercises and practice regular exercise that you enjoy, such as walking, swimming or yoga. Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol and sugar as these can all cause mood swings or make them worse. A good night’s sleep can also help. It often helps to talk to a friend or family member even if you find this difficult. If it bothers you, consult with your doctor.
