Axid Capsule is an antacid. It reduces the amount of excess acid made by your stomach. It is used to treat and prevent heartburn, indigestion and other symptoms caused by too much acid in the stomach. It is also used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, reflux disease and some other rare conditions.

Axid Capsule is also commonly prescribed to prevent stomach ulcers and heartburn caused due to the use of pain-killers. It must be swallowed whole with water before or after a meal. The medicine must be taken in dose and duration advised by the doctor. This medicine should relieve indigestion and heartburn within a few hours. If the symptoms persist or get worse even after 14 days of treatment, you should consult your doctor immediately. It is not recommended to take this medicine in severe stomach disease. You can help the medicine work better by eating smaller meals more often and avoiding spicy or oily foods.

Most people do not experience any side effects while taking this medicine. However, the most common side effects include fatigue, drowsiness, headache, constipation, diarrhea, and muscle pain. These symptoms are usually mild and will go away when you stop taking this medicine or as you adjust to it. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects bother you or do not go away.

Before taking it, inform your doctor if you have any kidney or liver diseases so that your doctor can prescribe a suitable dose for you. Also, tell your doctor if you are taking other medications. This medicine is usually considered safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding if it has been prescribed by a doctor. Avoid drinking alcohol as this can increase the amount of acid in your stomach and make your symptoms worse.

Heartburn is a burning feeling in your chest caused by stomach acids travelling back up towards your throat and mouth (acid reflux). It happens because a muscle above your stomach relaxes too much and allows stomach contents and acid to come back up into your esophagus and mouth. This can be a symptom of indigestion (dyspepsia). Axid Capsule belongs to a group of medicines called histamine 2 antagonists. It works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach makes and relieves the pain associated with heartburn and indigestion.

You should take it exactly as it is prescribed or as it says on the label for it to be effective. Some simple lifestyle changes can help stop or reduce heartburn. Think about what foods trigger heartburn and try to avoid them; eat smaller more frequent meals; try to lose weight if you are overweight and try to find ways to relax. Kidney

Axid Capsule should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Axid Capsule may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Interaction with drugs

Taking Axid with any of the following medicines can modify the effect of either of them and cause some undesirable side effects

Severe

Dasatinib (Oral Route)

Do not consume Dasatinib with Nizatidine. Nizatidine may reduce blood levels of Dasatinib.

Moderate

Acalabrutinib (Oral Route)

Nizatidine may reduce blood levels of Acalabrutinib.

Moderate

Cefpodoxime Proxetil (Oral Route)

To take Cefpodoxime Proxetil, ensure a gap of at least 2 hours before taking Nizatidine. Nizatidine may reduce blood levels of Cefpodoxime Proxetil.

Moderate

Ketoconazole (Oral Route)

If concurrent use is essential, your doctor may recommend you to take Ketoconazole with an acidic drink (like cola), monitor your treatment and adjust the doses as per the observations. Nizatidine may reduce blood levels of Ketoconazole.

Itraconazole (Oral Route)

Your doctor may monitor the effects of Itraconazole along with your overall treatment and adjust the doses as per the observations. Nizatidine may reduce the efficacy of Itraconazole.

Can I take Axid Capsule empty stomach?

Axid Capsule may be taken with or without food. It can be taken once daily before bedtime or twice daily in the morning and before bedtime, as recommended.

How long does it take for Axid Capsule to start working?

After taking Axid Capsule orally, the effect occurs within one hour. The maximum effect is generally reached within one to three hours of taking it. However, it depends upon the dose. The action of the medicine lasts for about 10 to 12 hours.

What is the difference between Axid Capsule and omeprazole?

Axid Capsule and Omeprazole belong to different group of medicines. While Axid Capsule belongs to histamine H2 antagonists group, Omeprazole belongs to proton pump inhibitors group. These medicines (Axid Capsule and Omeprazole) work by reducing the amount of acid made by the stomach, to give relief of symptoms and allow healing to take place.

Can I take alcohol with Axid Capsule?

Alcohol does not interfere with the working of Axid Capsule. But, you should avoid taking alcohol as it will further damage the stomach, delaying your recovery.

What are the serious side effects of Axid Capsule?

Axid Capsule may have some serious side effects, but these are rare. These side effects may include hives, skin rash, itching, hoarseness and difficulty in breathing or swallowing. Another serious symptom may be swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs. Inform your doctor in case you notice any of the mentioned symptoms.

What are the dos and don’ts while taking Axid Capsule?

Avoid taking aspirin and other painkillers used to treat arthritis, period pain or headache. These medicines may irritate the stomach and make your condition worse. Contact your doctor who may suggest other medicines. Avoid coffee, tea, cocoa and cola drinks because these contain ingredients that may irritate your stomach. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Eat slowly and chew your food carefully. Try not to rush at meal times. You should stop or cut down on smoking.

Is Axid Capsule safe for long-term use?

There is limited data available on whether Axid Capsule can be used for a long term or not, but it is a relatively safe medicine. You should take it for the duration advised by your doctor. Do not take over-the-counter Axid Capsule for longer than 2 weeks unless advised by your doctor.
