Penvir 250 Tablet should be taken in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. It may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule, to avoid overdose. You should drink plenty of water while on treatment with this medicine as it helps to prevent dehydration and kidney damage.

Some side effects of this medicine include headache, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, fatigue, and fever. Inform your doctor if these side effects persist for a longer duration. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding.

Limited information is available on the use of Penvir 250 Tablet in these patients. No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with mild to moderate liver disease.

Interaction with drugs

Taking Penvir with any of the following medicines can modify the effect of either of them and cause some undesirable side effects

Probenecid (Oral Route)

If concurrent use is essential, watch out for symptoms such as sedation, nausea, dizziness, fatigue or constipation and consult your doctor if you experience them. They may adjust the doses as per the observations. Probenecid may slow down the removal of Famciclovir through the kidneys.

Moderate

Herpes Zoster / Shingles Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted) (Injection Route)

Ensure a gap of at least 48 hours after discontinuing Famciclovir before taking Herpes Zoster / Shingles Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted). Do not take Famciclovir for at least 2 weeks after using Herpes Zoster / Shingles Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted). Famciclovir may reduce the efficacy of Herpes Zoster / Shingles Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted).

Mild

Favipiravir (Oral Route)

Talk to your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms. Famciclovir may reduce blood levels of Favipiravir.

No, you can infect other people, even while you are being treated with Penvir 250 Tablet. Herpes infections are contagious, so avoid letting infected areas come into contact with other people. You should not have sex if you have genital sores or blisters.

Do elderly patients need to be more careful while taking Penvir 250 Tablet?

Older adults (over age 65 years) tend to experience more side effects when taking Penvir 250 Tablet. The reason being, their kidneys do not flush the drug out of their system as quickly as a younger person’s kidneys would do. Elderly patients should drink plenty of water while taking Penvir 250 Tablet, and their kidney function should be monitored. These patients should be given a lower dose and should be monitored for neurological problems.

What if I forget to take a dose of Penvir 250 Tablet?

If you forget a dose of Penvir 250 Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose in the prescribed time. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one as this may increase the chances of developing side effects.

What can happen if somebody takes more than the recommended dose of Penvir 250 Tablet accidentally?

Accidental, repeated overdoses of oral Penvir 250 Tablet over several days have resulted in nausea, vomiting, confusion and headache. Consult your doctor in case of overdose.
