A myoglobin test measures the amount of myoglobin, a protein found in your skeletal muscles and heart muscles, in your blood or urine. Skeletal muscles are the muscles that are related to your tendons and bones. A blood test for myoglobin can be used by medical professionals to identify muscle injury. Myoglobin is released into the bloodstream by injured muscle cells, such as those in the heart or skeletal muscles. Myoglobin levels in blood are often measured within a few hours of an injury because they can rise quickly with significant muscle damage.
