Myoglobin, Serum

Myoglobin is a small protein found in both skeletal and cardiac muscles, where it stores and transports oxygen for muscle activity. When muscle tissue is damaged due to trauma, strenuous exercise, heart attack, burns, seizures, or certain medical conditions, myoglobin is rapidly released into the blood. Because of its small size, myoglobin enters the blood quickly after injury, often before other muscle or heart markers become elevated.

High levels of serum myoglobin indicate acute muscle breakdown and may also serve as an early but non-specific  marker of a heart attack (myocardial infarction), though more specific tests like troponin are preferred for cardiac diagnosis. Persistently high serum myoglobin levels can overload the kidneys, leading to acute kidney injury.

Doctors may recommend this test when a patient presents with symptoms such as severe muscle pain, swelling, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, or dark-colored urine. It is especially useful in suspected cases of rhabdomyolysis, crush injuries, myocardial infarction, prolonged immobility, electrical burns, or heat stroke. Doctors use the Myoglobin, Serum test alongside  Creatine Kinase (CK) and troponin tests for comprehensive evaluation.
