Intrinsic Factor, IgG Antibody

Intrinsic factor (IF) is a glycoprotein produced in the stomach lining cells. IF binds to vitamin B12 and enables its absorption in the small intestine. The Intrinsic Factor, IgG Antibody test checks for the presence of autoantibodies that target this protein. These antibodies can reduce/block B12 absorption, leading to pernicious anemia, a common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Doctors may advise the Intrinsic Factor, IgG Antibody test if there are symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, numbness, or memory issues, or if there's clinical suspicion of B12 deficiency without dietary causes. It may be ordered alongside other tests like serum B12, methylmalonic acid (MMA), or homocysteine to confirm diagnosis. 

Early detection of intrinsic factor antibodies helps in initiating appropriate treatment and preventing long-term neurological complications due to prolonged vitamin B12 deficiency.
