Understanding Factor IX Activity
What is Factor IX Activity?
Factor IX Activity test is a blood test used to check the level of factor IX, a protein that plays an important role in the blood clotting process. If the level of factor IX is too low in the blood, it can lead to a bleeding disorder called hemophilia B in which there is prolonged bleeding after an injury, cut, or trauma and even spontaneous bleeding without any apparent cause. Hemophilia B is an inherited disease so this test can be done when there is a family history of bleeding disorders. This test can help your doctor determine the appropriate dose of factor IX replacement therapy (replacement of missing factor IX). Overall, this test can help your doctor detect and manage bleeding disorders like hemophilia B.
What is Factor IX Activity used for?
- To diagnose factor IX deficiency (hemophilia B)
- To monitor factor IX replacement therapy
- To monitor the severity of a factor deficiency and/or the effectiveness of treatment
- If your family history shows a record of this condition
