Tacrograf 0.25 Capsule

Prescription Required

Overview

Introduction

Tacrograf 0.25 Capsule is used along with other medicines to prevent your body rejecting a new organ (e.g., liver, kidney or heart) after transplant. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as immunosuppressants. It works by weakening your body’s immune system, so it does not attack the new organ.

The amount of Tacrograf 0.25 Capsule you take and how often you take it depends on the type of transplant you have, your body weight and what other medicines you are taking. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. You should take it on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Take this medicine regularly to get the maximum benefit and keep taking it, even if you feel well. If you stop taking it, you may increase the chances of rejecting your transplanted organ.

Tacrograf 0.25 Capsule has many potential side effects. It can cause or worsen diabetes and kidney and liver problems. These need urgent medical attention. Other common side effects include nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and difficulty sleeping. If these or other side effects do not go away or get worse, tell your doctor. Because it lowers your immune system, you may also catch more infections than usual.

Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have kidney, liver or heart problems, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Also let your doctor know what other medications you are taking, especially for infections, pain, and arthritis. These and others may affect, or be affected by, this medicine. You should limit your exposure to the sun and UV (ultraviolet) light while taking it because immunosuppressants could increase your risk of skin cancer.

Both men and women using this medicine should use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy. This medicine is not normally recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless it is clearly needed. Before and during treatment you will need frequent medical tests to monitor your progress, and your blood pressure will need to be checked often.

Benefits of Tacrograf Capsule

In Prevention of organ rejection in transplant patients

Tacrograf 0.25 Capsule belongs to a group of medicines known as immunosuppressants. Organ rejection happens when your immune system treats the new organ as an invader and attacks it. This medicine weakens your immune response (which usually fights infection) and reduces the chance of your body attacking the transplanted organ. It is used in combination with other medicines to make it much more likely that your transplant operation will be successful. You should continue taking the medicine and should not stop it until your doctor says so.

Side effects of Tacrograf Capsule

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Tacrograf

  • Diarrhea
  • Increased glucose level in blood
  • Increased thirst
  • Kidney damage
  • Liver damage
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Increased glucose level in blood
You may only know this after having a blood test. High levels of sugar in your blood can cause diabetes and lead to serious complications. You can help yourself by sticking to a healthy diet, taking regular exercise, and drinking plenty of sugar-free fluids. Avoid foods which cause your blood sugar to rise quickly (such as cakes, pastries and biscuits) and limit the amount of alcohol you drink. If it does not improve, there may be some medicines that can help to lower your blood sugar level. Your doctor may monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine and guide you accordingly.
  • Coping with Kidney damage
If you have kidney damage, you will probably know only after a blood or urine test is done. In general, making healthy lifestyle changes and eating a healthy balanced diet can improve the function of your kidneys. Discuss with your doctor what medicines or lifestyle changes might help.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Stomach pain
Try to get plenty of rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may relieve the stomach pain. It may help if you eat and drink slowly and have smaller and more frequent meals. Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and alcohol as these can make the pain worse. If you are in a lot of pain, speak to your doctor about possible medication. Your doctor may be able to prescribe some over-the-counter medicines to help reduce the pain.
