Redion 100mg Injection

Overview

Introduction

Redion 100mg Injection is an iron replacement medicine. It is used to treat a type of anemia where you have too few red blood cells because you have too little iron in your body (iron-deficiency anemia). Iron is needed to produce the red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body.

Redion 100mg Injection is given by slow infusion (drip) into a vein by your doctor or nurse. Your doctor will decide the dose you need and how many injections you should have to improve your anemia. It will also help to eat a well-balanced diet that has enough iron. Good sources of iron include pulses (dal), green leafy vegetables like spinach, beans, eggs, dry fruits, and non-vegetarian foods.

The most common side effects include vomiting, nausea, metallic taste (taste change), hypertension (high blood pressure), stomach pain, headache, and dizziness. Some people may develop a temporary fall in blood pressure (hypotension) if this medicine is given too rapidly. Your doctor will also monitor you for signs of an allergic reaction such as breathlessness, dizziness, feeling uneasy, hives, swelling of face, tongue, and throat, etc. while this medicine is being given. If you are bothered by them or they go on for longer, talk to your doctor or nurse.
You should not have this medicine if your anemia is not caused by a lack of iron. Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have rheumatoid arthritis, asthma or other allergies, high blood pressure or liver problems. This may affect your treatment. It is not known whether this medicine is safe for use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so please take advice from your doctor. You will have tests to check your blood cells and iron levels, monitor your progress and check for side effects. It may be advisable to limit alcohol during treatment.

  • Vomiting
  • Taste change
  • Stomach pain

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness)
Try to change the area of injection and the exact site of injection each time. Apply a cold compress to the injection site. These symptoms are usually mild and should only last a few hours. You can ask your doctor to recommend a medicine if it is bothering you.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

  • Coping with Taste change
Keep your mouth clean. Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with saltwater or mouthwash after each snack or meal. Use plastic or glass utensils if the food tastes like metal. Avoid very hot or very cold foods. Chewing mints or gums may also help in improving the taste. Increase your fluid intake and choose foods that have strong flavors. Try adding garlic, lemon juice, herbs, spices and pickles or chutneys. Avoid cigarette smoking.
  • Coping with Stomach pain
Try to get plenty of rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may relieve the stomach pain. It may help if you eat and drink slowly and have smaller and more frequent meals. Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and alcohol as these can make the pain worse. If you are in a lot of pain, speak to your doctor about possible medication. Your doctor may be able to prescribe some over-the-counter medicines to help reduce the pain.
