Introduction of Ranolaz Tablet ER

Ranolaz OD Tablet ER is a medicine used for the management of angina (heart-related chest pain). It helps to prevent new attacks of angina, but it does not stop an acute attack, once it has started. It relieves chest pain by making the heart work more efficiently.

Ranolaz OD Tablet ER should be taken regularly and may be used alone or in combination with other medicines. This medicine should be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. Lifestyle changes like low-fat diet, exercise and not smoking may help this medicine work better. Dizziness may occur in some patients as a side effect, but this gets better with time.

How to use Ranolaz Tablet ER

Taking it with food may lessen the chance the Ranolaz OD Tablet ER will upset the stomach.

What if you miss a dose of Ranolaz Tablet ER?

If you miss a dose of Ranolaz OD Tablet ER, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Q. What are the serious side effects of Ranolaz?

Ranolaz may cause changes in electrical activity of heart which is known as QT prolongation. Your doctor may get regular tests done to check the electrical activity of your heart. Tell your doctor right away if you feel faint, lightheaded or if your heart starts beating irregularly or fast, as these may be symptoms of QT prolongation. Ranolaz may also cause kidney failure in patients who already have kidney problems. Therefore, your doctor may need to do tests to check how your kidneys are working.

Q. I started taking Ranolaz about a week ago. Now I have noticed that my urine has become very dark though I am taking plenty of fluids. Is there anything to worry about?

Urine discoloration could be because of Ranolaz. You need not worry if you do not have any other symptoms. However, if it still bothers you, you can talk to your doctor who will advise you further.

Q. In case I accidentally take excess of Ranolaz, what will happen?

Excess of Ranolaz can cause nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, double vision, tiredness, severe tremor, confusion, hallucinations, difficulty in speaking and walking and you can even faint. If you have taken excess of Ranolaz by mistake, call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical care in a nearby hospital.

Q. Is it safe to take Ranolaz if I am already taking metoprolol?

Yes, it is safe to take the Ranolaz and Metoprolol together. Ranolaz has minimal effect on blood pressure in patients of angina.

Q. I am a diabetic and am taking metformin. My doctor has prescribed Ranolaz, is it safe to take both together?

If you are taking metformin along with Ranolaz, you have to be careful since Ranolaz may increase the levels of metformin in the body which can lead to metformin toxicity. Talk to your doctor who will modify the dose of metformin.

Q. I have been taking simvastatin to keep my cholesterol levels in check. Can I take Ranolaz with it?

It is recommended not to take simvastatin and Ranolaz together because it may cause simvastatin toxicity which may lead to symptoms like muscle weakness and soreness, fatigue, decreased urination, etc. Let your doctor know that you are already taking simvastatin. If it is still necessary to take, then take it exactly as advised by the doctor.
