FAQs

Q. What is PPZ used for?

PPZ is used for the treatment of stomach and intestinal ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers), reflux esophagitis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and ZE syndrome. It works by reducing the amount of acid made by your stomach.

Q. What are the long term side effects of PPZ?

Long-term use of PPZ for more than 3 months may decrease the levels of magnesium in your blood. This can make you feel tired, confused, and dizzy. It may also cause muscle twitches, shakiness, and an irregular heartbeat. Inform your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. In addition, if PPZ is used for more than a year, you may have increased chances of certain side effects such as bone fractures, gut infections, and vitamin B12 deficiency. With vitamin B12 deficiency you may develop symptoms such as feeling very tired, sore and red tongue, mouth ulcers, and pins and needles.

Q. Does PPZ cause weight gain?

Although rare but long-term treatment with PPZ may cause weight gain. The reason could be the relief from reflux symptoms which could make you eat more. Consult your doctor for any weight-related concern.

Q. Is PPZ safe?

Yes, PPZ is relatively safe. Most of the people who take PPZ do not get a side effect. It is advised to be taken as directed by the doctor for maximum benefits.

Q. Can I take PPZ for long term?

Long term treatment with PPZ should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.

Q. How long does it take for PPZ to work?

You should start to feel better within 2 to 3 days. It may take up to 4 weeks for PPZ to work properly so you may still have some symptoms during this time.

Q. What is the best time to take PPZ?

Usually, PPZ is taken once a day, first thing in the morning. If you take PPZ twice a day, take 1 dose in the morning and 1 dose in the evening. The tablets should be swallowed whole (remember not be chewed or crushed) and taken at least 1 hour before a meal with some water.

Q. Is single dose of PPZ sufficient?

No, single dose of PPZ is not sufficient. You should take it for at least 2 weeks, if taking on your own, for heartburn or acid reflux. Whereas, if you are to take it for stomach ulcers or ZE syndrome consult your doctor for duration of treatment.

Q. Can I stop taking PPZ if I feel better?

No,do not stop taking PPZ or change the dosage without consulting your doctor. If you have been on PPZ for a long time, suddenly stopping it may make your stomach produce a lot more acid and make your symptoms come back. Hence, a gradual dose reduction before stopping completely is preferred to avoid such things from happening.
