Omez Capsule

Overview

Introduction

Omez Capsule is a medicine which reduces the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux and problems in your food pipe. It is also used to prevent and treat stomach ulcers.

You should take Omez Capsule as your doctor advises. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for, but it should be the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time needed to treat your condition. Normally it should be swallowed whole about an hour before a meal and at the same time each day. It may take up to a few weeks to work properly but your doctor will tell you how long you need to be taking it for. You should keep on taking it as prescribed even if your symptoms disappear quickly. If you are taking this medicine for a long time, your doctor may carry out regular tests to check your levels of magnesium which can fall with this medicine.

Common side effects include headache, constipation or diarrhoea, stomach pain and feeling or being sick. These tend to be mild but talk to your doctor if they bother you or do not go away. The risk of side effects may increase the longer you take this medicine. Serious side effects are rare, but some need immediate medical attention. Ask your doctor what these are. You may be more likely to have a broken bone if you take it for a long time. It is best to avoid foods that seem to make your symptoms worse, such as rich, spicy and fatty foods. It also helps to cut down on caffeinated drinks, such as tea, coffee and cola, as well as alcohol.

Omez Capsule is not suitable for some people. Before taking this medicine, you need to tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems, are taking medicines for HIV, have had an allergic reaction to similar medicines in the past or have osteoporosis. Alcohol does not interfere with the way Omez Capsule works. However, drinking alcohol makes your stomach produce more acid than normal. This medicine can make you feel dizzy, sleepy, or affect your vision. If this happens, do not drive, cycle or use machinery or tools until you feel better. It is not usually recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

FAQs

Q. Can I take Omez with domperidone?

Omez can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing the gut motility and Omez decreases the acid production in the stomach. So, this combination is very effective in the treatment of reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal and stomach ulcers.

Q. What are the various conditions in which the use of Omez is contraindicated?

Use of Omez is contraindicated if you are allergic to this medicine or any other medicine belonging to the same class of drugs. Also, do not take Omez if you are already taking a medicine containing nelfinavir (used for the treatment of HIV infection).

Q. What if I miss my dose of Omez?

If you miss a dose of Omez, take it as soon as you remember and the next dose as scheduled. However, if it is almost the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose and then follow the regular schedule. Do not take double the dose.

Q. Can I take Omez along with oral contraceptive pills (birth control pills)?

Omez can be safely taken with oral contraceptive pills (birth control). They do not affect each other's action and no harmful effects have been seen when they are used together.

Q. Can Omez be used in cancer patients?

Omez can be taken by cancer patients as prescribed by a doctor. Since cancer patients may also take many other medicines for the primary cancer treatment or for other symptoms and infections, there are chances of drug interactions with Omez.

Q. For how long can Omez be taken?

Take Omez for as long as advised by your doctor. The duration of taking Omez would vary depending on your condition. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor.

Q. Can Omez cause calcium deficiency and osteoporosis?

Omez can cause osteoporosis (thinning of bones) as it decreases the calcium absorption leading to calcium deficiency. This leads to an increased risk of bone fractures on long-term use, like hip, wrist or spine fractures. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (these can increase the risk of osteoporosis) before starting your therapy. Take enough calcium and vitamin D to reduce the risk.

Q. Does Omez cause hepatitis B and can a patient of hepatitis take Omez?

Omez can rarely cause hepatitis B and very rarely it can lead to hepatic failure and encephalopathy in patients with the underlying liver disease. However, there are studies showing an increased occurrence of hepatic encephalopathy in hepatitis B patients using Omez. These medicines should be used with caution in patients with the underlying liver disease.

Q. Does Omez cause dementia?

Use of proton pump inhibitors like Omez has been recently linked with the development of dementia in elderly patients. As this risk of developing dementia is not confirmed, talk to your doctor for more information on this effect.

Q. Does Omez cause vitamin deficiencies?

Omez may cause vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. When taken orally, vitamin B12 requires an acidic environment for its absorption from the stomach while Omez causes a decrease in the gastric acid secretion. You may need to take vitamin B12 supplements along with it. The clinical significance of the decrease in vitamin C levels is not known, so vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.

Q. What is the role of Omez before endoscopy in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding?

Omez before endoscopy in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding reduces the need for endoscopic therapy, the rate of post-endoscopy bleeding, and shortens hospital stays. Hence Omez is given before endoscopy in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding.

Q. Is Omez habit-forming?

Omez does not get you high and does not cause any addiction while taking it. Moreover, there are no withdrawal symptoms seen when patients stop using Omez as it has no habit forming tendencies.

Q. Can Omez be used in cardiac patients?

Patients with cardiac disease can take Omez as prescribed by the doctor. However, Omez can interact with certain drugs (e.g clopidogrel, digoxin) which might be used by a patient with an underlying cardiac disease. Patients taking Omez and digoxin may need to be monitored for digoxin toxicity. Omez decreases the activation of clopidogrel, thus reducing its effects. Patients taking these medicines together need to be monitored closely by a doctor.
